Arum: We’re not welcome at MGM, skipping the Grand Arrival

Manny PacquiaoBy Raj Parmar: Manny Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum has indicated that his fighter will not take part in the standard grand arrival ceremony that takes place at the MGM Grand for big boxing events. Arum cites what he senses as resentment from the MGM towards his company Top Rank and favoritism towards Manny’s opponent Floyd Mayweather Jr.

The grand arrival ceremony usually gives the thousands of fans who pack Las Vegas for fight week the opportunity to watch the fighters make their entrance into the facility and get a close up view. The fighters also usually say a few words to the audience which further hypes the upcoming fight.

“We told them we’re coming in Monday night and we’re going to the Mandalay Bay and we’re not doing a grand arrival at the MGM,” Arum stated per philboxing.com, “We’ll have the press come over to Mandalay Bay and do an interview with Manny there.”

Arum also pointed out that the “Pacman” will only come to the MGM for the weigh-in, final press conference, the post-fight press conference and the actual fight. Usual custom is for both fighters to stay in luxurious rooms provided by the MGM for the entire Las Vegas stay however Manny will be staying at the Mandalay Bay.

“We’re not going to stay there any more than we have to, because we know by the way they’ve been acting that we’re not welcome,” Arum stated.

It should not be too surprising for the MGM to favor Mayweather as they have had a long documented history and partnership with the unbeaten boxer over the past few years. The MGM is decorated with Floyd’s TMT merchandise and Mayweather has proclaimed his loyalty to the MGM by bringing his lucrative boxing events there whenever he fights.

Arum also had a major falling out with the MGM last year when he brought the Pacquiao-Tim Bradley rematch to the venue. He was horrified to find that during the week of the Pacquiao-Bradley fight there were more advertisements for Mayweather’s upcoming fight with Marcos Maidana which was still a month away. Arum proceeded to blast the MGM and label them as incompetent hosts.

With the bad blood between Arum and MGM so thick to the point where Arum doesn’t even want Manny to stay in the facility, one can only wonder what the executive brass at the MGM is feeling in terms of hoping Floyd is able to conquer Pacquiao on May 2.
