floyd7By Scott Gilfoid: In responding to Britain’s Amir Khan’s claims that Floyd Mayweather Jr’s next fight against Manny Pacquiao will be a boring affair, Mayweather has offered Khan a ticket to see him in his mega-fight on May 2nd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mayweather told Khan that the world isn’t calling for a Mayweather-Khan or a Pacquiao-Khan fight. The world wants to see Mayweather vs. Pacquiao. Mayweather says that Khan will eventually be involved in big fights of his own in time, although Mayweather doesn’t say who Khan will be fighting.

Given the high price of the tickets for the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Khan takes Mayweather up on the offer for the free ticket. We could be talking about a ticket that goes for $4000 to $10,000.

“The world was not calling for Mayweather vs. Khan or Pacquiao vs. Khan. He knows that,” Mayweather said via the Dailymail.co.uk. “He is going to get big fights. I am touched that Amir is concerned about the fight, and that it might be boring for the fans. He doesn’t need to worry…I can even get him a ticket of he wants so he can see what the biggest fight in history of boxing looks like and to appease his fears he might have about a boring fight.”

Khan is bent out of shape because he didn’t get a fight against either Mayweather or Pacquiao. He wanted to get the fight with either of them, but especially Mayweather. What was kind of funny was that Khan even set a deadline of January 15th for Mayweather to decide if he wanted to fight him or not, as if something like this would make Mayweather feel an urgency to take him on.

Mayweather calmly told Khan in an interview that he doesn’t have the name recognition yet in the United States for it to be a fight that would be worthwhile to him. Khan’s recent fight against Devon Alexander last December wasn’t sold out.

It’s possible that boxing fans will clamor for a Mayweather-Khan fight in the future, but it’s probably not going to happen until Khan starts getting some solid wins under his best against good fighters that can punch instead of the weak variety of opponents that Khan has been feasting once since he was knocked out by Danny Garcia in 2012.

Khan has won his last four fights against Carlos Molina, Julio Diaz, Luis Collazo and Devon Alexander. However, none of those guys had any punching power and none of them were major players in the welterweight division, even though Collazo and Alexander were technically ranked fighters at the time that Khan fought them.

Alexander had recently been badly beaten by Shawn Porter at the time that Khan fought him. Porter did a much better job of beating Alexander than Khan did, and it was arguably a lot more interesting to watch because Porter didn’t play it safe like Khan did. He actually let his hands go and wasn’t afraid to get hit.

If Khan wants a fight against Mayweather, then he’s going to need to beat the following names: Keith Thurman, Porter, Lucas Matthysse, Marcos Maidana and Kell Brook. Until then, I don’t see Khan getting a fight against Mayweather.
