Froch may retire if he doesn’t get Chaves Jr fight, says McCracken

By Scott Gilfoid: Rob McCracken, the trainer for IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch, says that unless Froch gets a fight against former WBC middleweight title holder Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in 2015, he believes that Froch will retire from the sport.

McCracken thinks Froch will fight twice more if he can get the Chavez Jr fight first, but if he fails to get that fight then he sees him retiring from the sport.
Just why Froch is so dialed into a fight against Chavez Jr is the big question.

I mean, it’s not as if Froch couldn’t face other top fighters like Sergey Kovlaev at 175, Andre Ward, Anthony Dirrell, Andre Dirrell, Gennady Golovkin or James DeGale. Golovkin vs. Froch would be a fight that would likely do just as well as a Froch vs. Chavez Jr.

The only difference is Froch would have a much, much tougher fight beating the likes of Golovkin compared to Chavez Jr. Golovkin totally dominated Chavez Jr in sparring. But then again, it’s hard to tell what Froch wants from his final fights. Is he just looking for a guy that presents little risk to him so that he can finish out his career without getting beaten again or is he truly concerned about his legacy.

If Froch really is wrapped up in his legacy then it’s a no-brainer for him to fight the likes of Kovalev, Adonis Stevenson, Golovkin, Ward or the Dirrell brothers in his final fights rather than Chavez Jr. You have to remember how horrible Chavez Jr looked against Sergio Martinez and Brian Vera when you factor him in as an opponent for Froch.

“They are talking to Julio Cesar Chavez Jr about fighting in Las Vegas, and that is a possibility. We are talking about it now, so we will see if it can happen,” McCracken said to espn.co.uk. “At the very most he will box twice more. But if I was a betting man I would say one more and if it doesn’t happen, he will retire.”

Froch can definitely do a whole lot better than Chavez Jr if he’s interested in taking risky fights. Chavez Jr hasn’t fought in ages, and he hasn’t been in with a good fighter since he was whipped in 2012. Since then, Chavez Jr has twice fought middleweight Brian Vera in dragging him up to the super middleweight division to fight him. Heck, Chavez Jr still hasn’t even fought a legitimate super middleweight.

Many of Froch’s fans say that he deserves to skate through his final one to two fights of his career due to him having fought good opposition for most of his career, but I don’t think that makes sense. Froch should be willing to fight the best up until he retires rather than lowering his standards in order to make sure he doesn’t get whipped.
