Adonis Stevenson vs. Andrzej Fonfara II possible for April

fonfara7By Dan Ambrose: WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson’s promoter Yvon Michel is talking about matching Stevenson back up with #5 WBC Andrzej Fonfara (26-3, 15 KOs) in a rematch in April. This would be something that would have to be blessed by Showtime since they would be the one televising the fight on their network.

It’s unclear whether this mismatch would pass muster because Fonfara clearly lost the fight to Stevenson by a 12 round unanimous decision last May. Fonfara did knock Stevenson down in the 8th round in that fight, but then Stevenson stepped on the gas and dominated the final four rounds of the fight.

“We will propose Fonfara,” Michel said via Fightnews.com. “For April we want the best possible opponent.”

I’m not sure that a rematch between Stevenson and Fonfara would make for good television. It would be far better for Stevenson to take on a different contender that has a good chance of winning the fight. Other than the flash knockdown that he scored, Fonfara did little more than soak up one-way punishment for 12 rounds. I don’t know that he could do anything more in a rematch other than take more punishment for 12 rounds.

Stevenson has had four one-sided fights since winning the WBC title in beating woeful opposition. Fonfara was better than the other horribly over-matched fodder that Stevenson has faced, but he was still really poor.

You can understand why Stevenson’s management would want to put him back in with Fonfara. It’s another winnable fight for them. It’s not something that promises to be an entertaining fight. It would be better if they found some new blood to put in with Stevenson, preferably someone that actually has a chance of beating him like Artur Beterbiev.

Fonfara rebounded from his loss to Stevenson to come back and defeat little known Doudou Ngumbu by a 10 round unanimous decision last November. Fonfara did not look good in that fight, and there was no sign of improvement from him from his loss to Stevenson.

I’d be surprised if Showtime green lights the Stevenson-Fonfara rematch because it’s not a fight that promises to be a good one.

The light heavyweight division is so incredibly poor at this time. There’s about five or six good fighters, and the rest of them are mediocre with little in the way of talent.
