Who do you pick: Big Names vs Real Fighters?

golovkin66By Gerardo Granados: It is great for a couple of boxers to have all the support from the media and it is even better when you are able to search for great boxers and fights. But sadly on times we get saturated on the news and reviews of only a couple of the so called big names.

Do this means that we have become hostages of media information; is it possible that we the fight fans can get deluded to follow Big Names which are backed up only by a huge hype but little substance?

I can´t tell three valid reasons why the mandatory challenger should be avoided by endless eliminator bouts by buying him out or by a step aside agreement. Danny Garcia was given the chance to take a voluntary defense and then defend his strap against Viktor Postol who was supposed to fight next.

Peter Quillin vacated his belt and I can’t deny it was really disappointing for me. Floyd hasn’t even mention Keith Thurman as a possibility. Pacquiao got to fight another tailor made light welter Chris Algieri.

How can we get to see new comers, how can the young lions prove their worth if the so called Big Names won’t fight them due business wise reasons, and even worst because due contractual issues some fighters are freeze waiting for their contract to expire.

But not everything is bad, there are a couple of big names who aren’t afraid to face top contenders just as others hand pick tailor made opponents in order to look good in the eyes of the casual fan. I confess that I am not a big fan of his boxing style, but to me Bernard Hopkins sets the example for what fight fans expect a true Champion should be.

Pro boxing is a business as the reader already knows and it is also undeniable that we need to see a Champion engage dangerous lions at title bouts and allow them to take in between ten round bouts against a good suitable opponent, just as in the past Champions did. But to see how easily some belt holders get to bend the rules starts to bother me as a fight fan.

There are brave skilled lions that deserve a shot at the big names, I will only name Guillermo Rigondeaux, Keith Thurman and Gennady Golovkin but it seems it is too hard for them to get the fights that they have earned and the ones we the fight fans deserve.

Maybe I am the only one getting impatient but when you get to see a Big Name who owns a major organization belt to get to take on spoon fed opponents one after another it takes more than just a beer to let it go. Perhaps it is time to stop listening to the constant hype on the TV and just follow the fighters who are willing to take challenges even if they don’t head the main event, hey many times we don’t even have to pay to see them fight!

Since when fight fans must follow whatever they are told to be great boxers, when time after time we get disappointed. Do the readers think that if fight fans start to follow the fighters then the big names will be forced to fight them
