Quillin: Golovkin vacated his WBA title, Jacobs has the WBA belt

quillin52By Dan Ambrose: Former WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin is claiming that the reason why the World Boxing Association made Gennady Golovkin the WBA Super World champion was because Golovkin failed to fight Jarrod Fletcher.

Quillin seems to have his mind made up that Daniel Jacobs is the main WBA middleweight champion and Golovkin was made the WBA Supper World champ only because he didn’t fight Fletcher.

The WBA elevated Golovkin to Super World champion last June. The previous WBA Super Champion Daniel Geale was stripped of that status by the WBA in October of 2012 after he failed to fight Golovkin, who was the WBA regular middleweight champion at the time. Geale wanted to fight Anthony Mundine rather than face Golovkin. But for some reason the WBA didn’t give Golovkin the Super World WBA status until June of 2014.

“Why did they [WBA] make him [Golovkin] the super champion for a reason,” Quillin said to Thaboxingvoice. “He vacated his belt. His number one contender was Jarrod Fletcher. He vacated his belt and the WBA made him a super champion. Who has Golovkin fought to be a super champion? If he had defended his title then there would be no reason for him to be a super champion.”

The way that Quillin is talking you’d think that the Super champion is a lower champion than the regular WBA champion rather than the other way around.

Quillin made little sense throughout the entire interview. He says that the $1.4 million that he would have gotten for the fight wouldn’t have been nearly that much by the time that his team and Golden Boy took their cut, which is obviously true, but it would still be the biggest payday of his career. His smaller purses he’s had have had his team and Golden Boy taking a cut obviously, so why would he turn down a bigger payday.

Quillin also said that he was given nothing more than a handshake from his adviser Al Haymon after he met with him recently to decide on vacating his WBO title. There was no money given to him. Quillin believes that he’s going to get equally big payday in the future like the one he walked away from in the Korobov fight.

Quillin believes he’ll pick up another title belt at 160 either against Jacobs or the winner of the Jermain Taylor vs. Sam Soliman. Those are the two fights that Quillin mentioned first. He also thinks he could wind up facing Miguel Cotto and Golovkin in the future, but he didn’t sound nearly as positive about those fights as he did about the Jacobs fight. Quillin says that his team has bigger plans for him, but he can’t elaborate what those plans are.

Quillin says he has a ton of faith in Haymon in directing his career and he believes that he made the right decision in vacating his title rather than taking the Korovbov fight and the $1.4 million payday. The thing is if Quillin doesn’t get a bigger payday for the Jacobs fight and if he gets beaten, which is a clear possibility, then all Quillin will have is the smaller payday and a handshake from Haymon to show for having walked away from the $1.4 million.
