By Chris Williams: WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KOs) had words for his opposition last Saturday night on his ALL Access: Mayeather vs. Maidana 2 episode, in which Mayweather said this about his opponents: “They think they’re good. I know I’m GREAT.”
Mayweather obviously had Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KOs) in mind with that comment, as well as many other fighters in the sport who feel they’re good enough to crack the May-Vinci code. No one has cracked it yet in the 18 years that Mayweather has been a pro, and it doesn’t look it’s going to happen before he retires.
“Nobody’s going to kick me off this throne. I’m going to stay at the top and do what I want to.”
Maidana is going to need to bring his A-game on September 13th and hope that Mayweather has an off night for him to be competitive in this fight, because right now it’s not looking good for Maidana going into this fight.
Mayweather wants to bring his normal fighting style to their rematch, and that means he’s going to be looking to box Maidana all night long to keep him from landing his big power shots that he likes to land. Maidana had months to pour over his previous fight against Mayweather to try and come up with some kind of plan to crack the May-Vinci code, but Mayweather is someone who can make changes on the fly in the course of a bout.
This means that Maidana is going to need to come up with huge number of alternative plans that he can plug in for every look that Mayweather gives him on September 13th. If Maidana just comes in with that same basic all-out attack mode that he brought for their previous fight, then it’s probably not going to work.
Mayweather will have that game plan neutralized walking in the ring in this fight. If that’s all Maidana is going to bring to the table when he gets in the ring at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, then it’s going to be 12 rounds of straight clowning. Mayweather will make Maidana look bad and take him to school in front of entire world.
Let’s get this straight: Mayweather’s skills are going to be a problem for Maidana. The only thing Maidana to improve his situation in this fight is to move at high speeds at all time with his footwork and hope Mayweather gets tired of boxing him, and decides to slug with him like he did last time.
