Will the second time be lucky for Marcos Maidana against Mayweather?

By Yannis Mihanos: Losing is supposed to be an opportunity for improving and trying even harder for the next time. Marcos Maidana’s strong performance against WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr last May granted him a second chance at fighting him.

A second chance to fight again the number 1 pound for pound king of boxing Mayweather jr (46-0, 26 KOs) on September 13th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

This is something that rarely happens in the career of Mayweather. Only once during his career has he fought an opponent for a second time and that was against Jose Luis Castillo. That match was also very close on points.

Maidana (35-4, 31 KOs) and his team this time believe that by raising the volume of punches and attacks will leverage the gap that in the last fight decided the outcome.

But it is easier said than done especially when you have someone in front of you who trains and excels on a specific area: Defense.

That’s funny: one is training hard on giving punches and one is training specifically on evicting them. That comes also as no surprise at all once the nature of both fighters is revealed: one is a boxer at its best and one is a puncher at its best.

But to be more realistic, Maidana needs to do much more than that: he needs to move fast with both his hands and feet. Team Maidana hopes to bring him lighter in the ring than last time. A few pounds less might help him on his movement overall.

On the other side, Mayweather is an intelligent fighter. In his previous fight against Maidana his plan went almost wrong after he was forced to stay on the ropes for too long due to the constant pressure that Maidana put on him.

I don’t think Mayweather intends to follow this plan again, at least not to the same extend. It’s more likely he will engage for a couple of rounds and the rest of it will be classic Mayweather material: Hit and Run.

The title of the new promotion for the fight is Mayhem. This is a title that fits nicely for what happened in the last fight. There is no doubt that promoting is Floyd’s territory, and he knows how to sell.

Everybody also expects what the next choice of opponent will be for Mayweather is going to be. He mentioned earlier on the media something about picking a surprise opponent for next May.

For the most of us that brings to mind no other than Manny Pacquiao, but I doubt a lot about it. There is still a lot of road to travel before this agreement comes to fruition.

Maybe Mayweather will go up to the 160 pounds division and face one of the challengers there (Miguel Cotto, Gennady Golovkin or Bernard Hopkins).

In the welterweight division, I see no other surprises. There are many opponents but no one that can be called a surprise.

As the time passes fast and we are moving closer towards the rematch, some new questions will arise and some old will get finally answered.

If Maidana has to make his mark on boxing I think now is the time. Many people would wish to have a second chance in life for something that they missed or didn’t do right on time. They say that once the window of opportunity closes it is difficult to reopen. It happens, but not so often.
