Maidana says he’ll fight Mayweather a third time if he beats him on September 13th

may91By Allan Fox: Former WBA 147 pound champion Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KOs) says he’ll give WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KOs) and immediate rematch for a third fight if he beats him in their fight on September 13th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mayweather agreed to give him a rematch after beating him last May, so Maidana will pay Mayweather back by giving him a chance to redeem himself with a third fight. Whether the WBA and WBC sanctioning bodies would agree to let Mayweather and Maidana to fight a third fight is another matter.

They would likely insist that the winner of the Mayweather-Maidana 2 fight have to fight the #1 WBA Keith Thurman or #2 WBC Amir Khan. But if do this, they’ll likely get ignored with Mayweather or Maidana vacating their titles in order to face each other for their third fight.

“Right away, I’d negotiate for a third fight [with Mayweather,” Maidana said via esnewsporting.com, when asked if he would agree to fight Mayweather third time if he beats him on September 13th.

Mayweather wants to move on after the Maidana fight so that he can start taking on the bigger names at 147 and 154, but it’s unlikely that Mayweather would let himself walk away from a loss to Maidana. It would be nearly impossible for Mayweather to not try and fight Maidana a third time, because he’d lose so much status by walking away from a defeat to him.

It’s one thing for guys like Amir Khan to walk away from a loss without trying to avenge it, but for Mayweather to do the same thing, it would be a crushing blow to his career and it would likely cause him to lose massive amounts of fans.

For Maidana to have a chance of beating Mayweather, he’s going to need to be a lot smarter this time, because he spent too much time last May throwing wild shots that missed badly. The judges had to give Mayweather many of the rounds because of how bad he was making Maidana miss with his shots.

If Maidana could increase his accuracy by going to the body instead of head hunting so much, he could possibly nick a close decision against Mayweather. But Maidana is going to need to focus on being smarter and using better placement of his shots or else he’s going to wind up getting out-boxed again.
