Mayweather vs. Khan – we can make that, says Roger M

khan4444By Scott Gilfoid: Roger Mayweather, the uncle/trainer for Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KO’s), says he’s in favor of Mayweather fighting #1 WBC, #3 WBA Amir Khan (29-3, 19 KO’s) in the near future. He sees it as a viable fight to make to make in the future. Khan obviously took him out of contention for the fight by saying he can’t fight in September due to Ramadan. But there’s a chance that Khan can fight Mayweather next year in May unless Khan has some other thing that keeps him from fighting at that time too.

When asked if he’d like the Mayweather-Khan fight, Roger M said “They can make that. They can make that. That’s the whole key to make money. If you got a mother-**** to fight you that’s the number 1 thing.”

A Khan-Mayweather fight might be a doable one if Khan can beat a live body and stop fighting older guys like he’s been doing recently. It funny that Khan said that Kell Brook needs to fight a credible top level opponent before he’ll agree to fight him, because he really is in the same situation.

Khan had been doing really well for a while with former trainer Freddie Roach in beating old guys like Zab Judah and Paulie Malignaggi, but when Khan stepped it up against Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia, he lost. Since those defeats, Khan has pulled back from facing top level opposition and has beaten Carlos Molina, Julio Diaz and Luis Collazo.

Those guys are a long ways from being the best at 147. If Khan can prove himself by beating Shawn Porter, Devon Alexander or Keith Thurman in his next fight, he’ll have gone a long ways to proving himself deserving for a Mayweather fight. But with that said, Khan needs to clean up his game and stop shoving, holding, pulling down on his opponent’s heads, and running. Even if Khan beats one of those guys, if he does it by using the above tactics for 12 rounds, then I don’t see him being a good opponent for Mayweather in the future.

Mayweather doesn’t need to fight a guy using a blend of MMA tactics when he fights, which is kind of what Khan is doing nowadays with the headlocks, shoving, pulling down on the head and holding.

Mayweather needs to fight a guy who is willing to keep it clean and follow the Marquess of Queensberry Rules at all times. If Mayweather wanted to dabble into the MMA field, he could, but why would he want to? Khan needs to show that he can fight without the MMA part of his game, because the referees have been doing a terrible job of cleaning up his game when he fights. I mean, the last thing Mayweather needs is to be facing a guy who is going to chock him out with a head-lock while he’s fighting.

I lost track of the amount of times Khan put Collazo into a head-lock last May in their fight on the Mayweather vs. Marcos Maidana undercard at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Each time Collazo would come out of the head-lock, his face was a bright red from lack of oxygen. Khan must have been really cranking on the head-lock for Collazo to be red in the face each time.
