floyd00001By Allan Fox: Trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. says he was unhappy with the way that his son Floyd Mayweather Jr. (46-0, 26 KO’s) spent so much time fighting off the ropes last Saturday night against Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KO’s). Floyd Sr. says he told Mayweather Jr. that he didn’t want him staying against the ropes in that fight, and that was something that he took an issue with in his performance. Floyd Sr. also said he doesn’t like to see Mayweather Jr. taking shots like the big hits he was absorbing last Saturday against Maidana.

“It was still a good performance, but not one of his best,” Floyd Sr. said about Mayweather’s fight against Maidana. “Floyd showed that he could fight the guy’s fight. Next time around we’ll see. You don’t need to be on the ropes all the time. That was one of the things I rejected. I think it’s very important that it [the Mayweather-Maidana rematch] happen. If that’s what they [boxing fans] want, then that’s what they going to get. Sometimes we don’t know ourselves that we getting to the age [of retirement] that we don’t really have it. And after seeing the fight today, Floyd showed that he’s a strong individual, but I don’t like seeing him get hit.”

It seems as if Floyd Sr. doesn’t want Mayweather Jr. brawling with his opponents like he purposefully decided to do against Maidana. Floyd Sr. wants Mayweather to fight his opponents the same way he did against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Robert Guerrero, two fighters that Mayweather beat without taking many punches due to his excellent defensive skills in those fights.

Mayweather fought Maidana the same way that he did against Miguel Cotto, and he got the same results in terms of a bruised face and less than impressive performance. A lot of boxing fans were questioning whether Mayweather was starting to show signs of being over-the-hill after his fight with Cotto, but Mayweather switched trainers from Roger Mayweather to his father Floyd Sr. for his next two fights against Guerrero and Canelo, and he looked untouchable.

Mayweather needs to listen to his father and focus on boxing his opponents instead of slugging with them. Instead of trying to please the fans, Mayweather Jr. needs to focus on winning as easily as he possibly can. It’s too dangerous for him to be getting in the trenches with younger, stronger fighters like Maidana
