Why doesn’t Mayweather just retire?

mayweather453By Liam Fitzpatrick: Seriously everyone. I’m as big a boxing fan as the next person and love watching a good fight, but I really don’t think that watching Floyd Mayweather Jr. go in against anyone will give us this. Don’t get me wrong, I am not trying to take anything away from the guy. He is an exceptional boxer and quite literally the best in the business, but the last good fight I saw him in was with Miguel Cotto.

I admit I was excited about the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fight, although I would have preferred them to fight this year rather than last as I think Canelo still hadn’t reached his full maturity at the time they fought. Watching the way he was schooled by the pound for pound king was a humbling experience, and has led me to ask, who would honestly have any better chance against Mayweather?

I hear some of you screaming Pacquiao, and yes, I would love to see this fight as much as anyone (I actually believe it will be Floyd’s swan song). But with politics being as strife as they are I really don’t see it materializing any time soon, and anyway, there are still four fights to come before Mayweather hangs up his gloves. Watching these two at it three or four times just isn’t that appealing (would anyone like to see another Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez fight? Exactly).

At the time of writing, Mayweather still hasn’t announced who he will be fighting next, but I hope it isn’t Amir Khan or Marcos Maidana. The reasons being that Khan simply isn’t all that; he spat his dummy out when he was beaten by Lamont Peterson in 2011, and hasn’t looked good since. Khan has even ducked a fight with Devon Alexander, because he was afraid of getting beat. Whilst watching Broner try and get back at being beaten up by Maidana, for me, would be far more entertaining. So who could be next for Floyd? This is exactly the predicament as there simply isn’t anyone. Yes, I can think of a list of names like I imagine most others can, but can you really see those guys doing anything with Mayweather other than be taken out of their game and made to look amateurish and thus making the fight far less competitive because I can’t.

So where does this leave us? Well, I’m sorry but I’d rather thank Mayweather for what he has done for the sport in setting the bar so high and see him retire. I mean there are only a handful of fighters throughout history who can claim to have finished on top of their game with an unbeaten record, whilst laying claim to having fought the names Floyd has and kept the pound for pound spot for as long as he has, whilst accumulating a bank account that leaves most envious. So why not leave it at that? He is just too good, and those that try and come close in their meager attempts to dethrone him look more than a little pathetic. So why not trade at a level below him as there are numerous far more interesting fights to be made away from getting in the ring with Mayweather? So why don’t we watch them?
