Matthysse possible for Mayweather’s undercard on May 3rd

matthysse559By Dan Ambrose: Conditioning coach Marcelo Crudelo is saying that former WBC light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse (34-3, 32 KO’s) is possible for the undercard of Floyd Mayweather Jr’s next fight card on May 3rd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to esnewsreporting.com. Matthysse is currently getting ready for his next fight already.

There’s still no names as to who Matthysse will be fighting, but it’ll likely be a decent opponent if he ends up the Mayweather pay-per-view fight card on Showtime, because he usually has competitive and interesting fights on his cards.

It would be interesting to see Matthysse challenging for another world title, but that’s not likely to happen anytime soon at 140. Matthysse isn’t ranked high enough to get a shot against any of the light welterweight champions right now, and none of them are going to volunteer to fight him due to him being such a tough out. Matthysse vs. someone like Devon Alexander would be an interesting fight for fans to see, even though Alexander is now fighting at 147 instead of 140.

Alexander barely beat Matthysse by a 10 round decision in 2011 in a fight that some fans believe Matthysse won. If there had been another 2 rounds, Matthysse would have removed all doubt because Alexander was fading badly in the last half of the fight and had little left. If not Alexander, a rematch between Matthysse and Zab Judah would also be a good fight. Judah beat Matthysse by a controversial decision in 2010. Matthysse has improved since then while Judah has gone downhill.

Matthysse, 31, lost his last fight against WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia last September on the undercard of the Mayweather vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez card in Las Vegas. Matthysse did his part in trying to make a fight of it, but Danny chose to run, hold and throw low blows for 12 rounds, and the fight was a huge disappointment as the co-feature.

That’s now how Matthysse fights, and he wasn’t able to land enough of his shots due to the spoiling tactics that Garcia used in the fight. However, when Matthysse was able to get Garcia to stand in front of him and trade, Matthysse was able to land a lot of big punches. In the last 6 rounds of the fight, it was virtually an un-watchable fight due to Danny’s tactics to keep from getting hit.

Matthysse will be a good addition to the Mayweather card if he’s matched against the right opponent. They can’t just put a weak opponent in with him and expect fans to be eager to see the fight.
