Ward: I would consider fighting Groves next

ward765By Scott Gilfoid: WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (27-0, 14 KO’s) thinks IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch should do the right thing and give George Groves (19-1, 15 KO’s) a rematch to shut down the controversy surrounding what many boxing fans feel was an illegitimate win for Froch.

Ward thinks Froch should man up and either take the Groves rematch or fight him again to try and avenge his loss to Ward from 2011. I don’t think Froch is particularly interested in doing either of those things judging by some of the things he’s been saying lately. Groves appears to be completely off his list 100 percent, and when Froch mentions Ward’s name, it’s usually after he’s mentioned Gennady Golovkin and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. In other words, Ward is kind of the last resort type of opponent that Froch might fall back onto when he’s on the verge of retirement. But what good is that if Ward gets Froch when he’s heading for his rocker, because it’s not like he’ll get any credit for whipping him at that point.

Ward said “UK fans still not happy with Carl “The Cobra” Froch huh? That’s why I respect #UK fans, they ride for the home team, but tell the truth!! His fans won’t except anything else. What do you think UK? Thing is if he [Froch] is going to live up to his tough guy image, he has to rematch Groves or try to avenge his loss to me. He’s got two options. I would consider fighting George Groves next. He showed a lot his last fight. He’s a good fighter & deserves a shot.”

I like the idea of Ward facing Groves. That would be a great fight, but I don’t think Groves will say yes to that one anytime soon. If Groves signs up with an American promotional company like Top Rank or Golden Boy Promotions, then I really don’t see Groves ever fighting Ward. Those guys aren’t going to throw Groves in with Ward knowing that he’d get beaten black and blue.

At this point I don’t think Groves would beat Edwin Rodriguez, I really don’t. While I do agree that Groves has Froch’s number, I don’t think he could hang with Rodriguez, Sakio Bika and definitely not with the Dirrell brothers. Ward is in his own class altogether, and Groves wouldn’t be allowed anywhere near a talent like Ward. It would be like signing him for a guaranteed loss if his new promoter chose to make that fight, and they’re not going to do that.
