Lampley [HBO] or Bernstein [Showtime]: Who is better in describing a fight?

By Al Hmiel: Boxing announcers make a good fight great and a poor fight better but who is today’s best Boxing Announcer and fight Analyst? HBO’s Jim Lampley has been a fixture on HBO for years as has Showtimes Al Bernstein who has also been inducted into Boxing’s Hall Of Fame.

Lampley seems to shout and scream and explodes into the microphone as the action heats up while Bernstein remains a cool collected professional analyst who doesn’t get overly excited. Both men have their strong points but which one is better for calling a big fight?

Listening to Lampley screaming about how hurt a fighter is or how much a fighter is close to being KO’d sometimes seems like an over exaggeration of the real facts.

Bernstein rarely gets emotional or screams his analysis over the others broadcasting with Al. HBO and Showtime put on excellent boxing cards and both of their lead boxing announcers are great at what they do. Bernstein has the advantage of having others do the lead fight announcing and Lampley seems to do it all by announcing and giving his analysis both at the same time in decibel screaming levels.

It’s hard to call which expert is better but since Bernstein has been recognized for his accomplishments and professional demeanor in describing a fight the nod seemingly goes to Al for his style over Lampley.

Does Lampley deserve Hall of Fame recognition?? Deservedly so. But since Bernstein is already in the Hall shouting emotional Lampley needs to gather more support. Showtime recently has been providing the boxing fans with outstanding boxing cards which showcase Bernstein better than the less exciting HBO events.

So Lampley versus Bernstein. Which one does the better job?
