canelo22By Gerardo Granados: This fight was considered as the upset of the decade, it took place a really long time ago and there is no doubt that the young and not so young boxing fans might not had the chance to see it. I saw it when I was a teenager and a casual fan too, back then for me the clear winner was Marvelous Marvin Hagler but maybe after twenty six years of watching boxing my view could off be different.

This bout could be a good choice to practice your fight scoring previous the Canelo vs. Money fight next September 14th. That fight had a catch weight involved too and was the major boxing event that year. It was a close fight and not an easy one to properly score because you cannot avoid to give more valor to one of the main aspects to score without allowing your personal boxing taste decide who won the round.

The cold number showed only a statistic having Hagler connecting 291 of 792 punches and Leonard connecting 306 of 629; the fight judge’s call might also show how their personal boxing taste influenced their scoring having a score of 115-113 for each fighter and a third judge being highly criticized for scoring the bout 118-110.

Maybe the reader could practice his scoring with this fight. This one might not be an exact copy of the fighters boxing styles but we could get to score a fight between a defensive boxer versus an aggressive fighter. It is not fair to compare Canelo to Hagler who was the favorite 3-1 versus Leonard but there is the size and power edge on both.

Leonard shut off a big part of the rounds; he was counter punching and circling around, clinching as a strategy and even applying other dirty tricks without being deducted a point by the referee. Hagler was pressuring the fight cutting off the ring and it seemed like he wasn’t impressed by Leonard´s power. Remember to base your decision in four aspects: first effective aggression, second ring generalship, third defense and fourth clean and hard punching.

Did the readers watch the Rigondeaux vs. Donaire fight? You will find a couple of similarities on Rigondeaux and Leonard´s game plan but you will also find that Leonard was appreciated for his performance not as Guillermo is. I have already scored the fight and I had it 115-113 for Hagler. So, do the readers believe it is a good idea to score the Hagler vs. Leonard fight previous the Canelo vs. Money?
