Chisora wants rematch with Haye and Fury if he gets past Gerber on Saturday

chisora34By Scott Gilfoid: Dereck Chisora (17-4, 11 KO’s) will be fighting for the vacant EBU heavyweight crown this Saturday night against Edmund Gerber (23-1, 14 KO’s) at the Copper Box Arena, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Hackney Wick, in London, United Kingdom. Chisora says he’s not that interested in fighting for a world title against one of the Klitschko brothers, but instead he’s got his sights set on trying to land a rematch against his former conquerors David Haye and Tyson Fury in what would be an all British clash.

Chisora was knocked out by Haye in the 5th round last year in May in a one-sided fight, and Fury beat an out of shape Chisora by a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision two years ago in July of 2011.

Chisora said to Sky Sports “I think there are better fights in Great Britain than us going to challenge for the world title. There’s a good mix with Tyson Fury, David Haye and myself…Let’s do our own thing and when they’re ready to give up the titles then people can fight for those world titles…why should I box for a world title when the Klitschkos are trying to slave you for the world titles your fighting for.”

It makes sense that Chisora wouldn’t be so eager to try and land a fight with one of the Klitschko brothers because with Chisora not even being ranked in the top 15 by any of the sanctioning bodies, we’re talking about it taking a long, long time before Chisora is ranked high enough to become the mandatory challenger to one of the Klitschkos. That’s pretty much what it would take for Chisora to get a title shot against either of the Klitschkos, because with the way that Chisora acted before his title shot against WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko last year in February, I don’t think the Klitschkos are going to do him any favors by giving him a title shot in an optional title defense.

Chisora had his one shot at being an optional title defense for Vitali, and he can pretty much forget about getting another opportunity like that. Can it happen? Yes, but not likely. At this point I seriously doubt that Chisora will ever be able to work his way into becoming a mandatory challenger for any of the heavyweight world champions, because to do that you have to be able to beat at least 1-2 good heavyweight contenders.

That means Chisora would have to beat a talent like Deontay Wilder, Chris Arreola, Bermane Stiverne and Kubrat Pulev. I can’t see Chisora ever beating any of them, so I can understand that why he’d be interested in facing Fury and Haye again. Those domestic fights might be as good as it gets for Chisora.
