Maidana to Broner: Shut up and fight me!

maidana4543By Allan Fox: A day after a rant that came out of nowhere by WBA welterweight champion Adrien Broner (27-0, 22 KO’s) directed at #2 WBA, Marcos Maidana (34-3, 31 KO’s) and Lucas Matthysse, Maidana responded back to Broner telling him to shut up and fight him already. It was pretty funny stuff.

Here’s what Broner had to say on his twitter: “You damn fool if you think Chino Maidana can beat me. LOL! And when I’m done with this b*** Chino Maidana, I’m go f*** Matthysse up. Easy money.”

This was Maidana’s response to him:

It looks like Broner sees Maidana as a real threat to him; otherwise why would be bother commenting on the guy. As bad as Broner looked in struggling to defeat former WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi last June, he should be very worried about Maidana. Broner doesn’t have the same kind of power at 147 that he had fighting in the 135 pound division, and he doesn’t have a high enough work rate to make up for his lack of power.

Unless Broner all of a sudden finds power at welterweight, he’s going to have to try and increase his punch output tenfold because he’s not going to be able to beat the Maidana and Matthysse type throwing 20 pot shot punches per round. Those guys will be throwing 3 times that many punches, but with a lot more power than what Broner can do.

If Broner is smart, he’ll vacate his WBA title rather than facing Maidana and getting exposed by him. Once Broner takes his first defeat, he can forget about pay per view riches and becoming the future face of boxing. A loss to Maidana will no doubt send Broner skittering back to the lightweight division, since he’s not going to stick around at 147 and risk getting beaten again by someone else.
