Ellberbe says “NO” Austin Trout vs. Erislandy Lara bout on Mayweather-Canelo fight card

By Dan Ambrose: Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe is saying that there will not be a fight between interim WBA light middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (18-1-2, 12 KO’s) and former WBA light middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-1, 14 KO’s) on the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez card on September 14th fight card from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer already stepped forward last week to say the Lara-Trout fight won’t be happening on the card, but rumors have persisted that a deal is being secretly worked on to make this the third fight on the card.

For some reason there’s not a lot of interest by Golden Boy in putting that fight together for the card, despite the fact that both Trout and Lara are highly interested in being able to showcase their talent on the card and getting the opportunity to be seen by millions of boxing fans.

Who wouldn’t want to be involved with a fight card like that? The problem is by putting Trout and Lara on the undercard it would potentially create pressure on Golden Boy, Mayweather and Canelo to fight one of those guys if they shine and create a lot of excitement with boxing fans.

I have a feeling that Golden Boy would rather that not happen, because Trout almost plucked Golden Boy’s Golden goose [Canelo] clean last April in fighting him to a standstill and losing a controversial 12 round decision.

Trout thinks the outcome would have been different had the fight not taken place in San Antonio, Texas instead of Las Vegas, Nevada, which is where it was originally going to take place.

Canelo shot himself in the foot by pulling the fight off of Mayweather’s fight card against Robert Guerrero last May when Canelo insisted that Mayweather give him a guarantee that he’d fight him in September.

Instead of being patient, Canelo showed his youth and pulled the fight off the card, resulting in the fight not being a PPV bout and losing out on all the eyeballs that would have seen the fight had it been on Mayweather’s undercard.

I think the fight would have still been with open scoring had it been staged in Las Vegas, and I imagine it would have been the same judges scoring the fight, so I’m not sure if Trout would have been any better off in Las Vegas than he was in San Antonio.

Trout should have said no to the fight once they mentioned open scoring because it was the open scoring that directly led to his defeat by causing him to change his game after he saw that the judges were Canelo almost every round despite the fact that he was getting out-boxed and outworked by Trout in the first 8 rounds.
