Hughie Fury vs. Darren Corbett on July 12th in Dundalk, Ireland

fury333By Scott Gilfoid: Heavyweight prospect Hughie Fury (6-0, 4 KO’s) will be facing an opponent with a winning record next month on July 12th against Ireland’s Darren Corbett (29-8-1, 16 KO’s) in a scheduled 6 round bout at the Fairways Hotel, in Dundalk, Ireland.

That’s the good news. The bad news is that Corbett is 40-years-old, has lost 3 out of his last 4 fights, hasn’t fought since last December, and hasn’t fought anyone that you can call a good fighter. So in other words, Corbett has won 29 fights, but he’s won them against guys that most people have never heard of and probably never will hear of unless they become a boxing historian.

Fury, 18, has been trumpeted by his promoter and his cousin Tyson Fury as a future world heavyweight champion. It seems to have gone to Hughie’s head because he’s now predicting that he’ll be a world champion within the next two years and that’ll break Mike Tyson’s record for being the youngest heavyweight champion of the world.

For those who don’t remember, Mike Tyson was a little over 20-years-old when he captured a world title for the first time. It would be a major accomplishment if the young Hughie were able to better that mark somehow. Hughie certainly has the size at 6’6” 240 lbs. to become a world champion by the time he’s 20, but I just don’t see the power, speed, talent and skills being there for Hughie to accomplish that goal.

Can the young Hughie capture a world title someday? I’m not sure, but if he’s going to capture a world title in the next two years, then he’s going to have to A. start fighting better opposition, a lot better. B. Do some pushups or something to work on his weak power. C. Learn how to block some punches and move his head so that he’s not easy to hit. His defense is terrible. D. Lose some of the flab around his midsection. He looks like he’s got blubber that he could take off if he were to hit a treadmill every once in a while.
