Fans vote for Broner to face Matthysse next

matthysse84By Allan Fox: WBA welterweight champion Adrien Broner asked boxing fans to pick out his next opponent for him after his 12 round split decision victory last Saturday night. Broner said he’d fight whoever boxing fans picked out for him, and fans have overwhelmingly selected WBC interim light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse as the guy that they’d like to see Broner face next.

In a poll at RingTV, 43 percent of the fans selected Matthysse as Broner’s next opponent. The next highest total is Marcos Maidana at 28%. Danny Garcia comes in at 12.6 percent.

Now it’s going to be interesting to see if Broner is actually willing to agree to face Matthysse. I think he’s going to have an excuse for not fighting him by saying that Matthysse is facing Danny Garcia next, which may or not actually happen.

Golden Boy wants Broner to fight Maidana, but it wouldn’t be surprising if he face Shane Mosley instead. His name has been one of the names that have been floating around as Broner’s potential opponent for his first defense of his WBA title even before he captured the strap. Mosley would be a recognizable name for Broner while at the same time giving him a safe fight to milk his title for his first defense.

It’s going to look bad if Broner takes a soft opponent for his first defense or even worse if he vacates his WBA title and moves back down to 135 to continue defending his WBC lightweight title against the mostly weak opposition in that weight class.

Matthysse would be a very dangerous fight for Broner. All those shots that Malignaggi was landing against Broner last Saturday night would be potential knockout blows with Matthysse landing them. Broner wouldn’t have the power to hold Matthysse of with his pot shots, and he couldn’t outwork him because Broner doesn’t throw combinations. He’s mostly just a pot-shot type of fighter.
