Matthysse: I’m willing to go up to 147 to face Mayweather

matthysse84By Dan Ambrose: WBC interim light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse has his sights set on a big money fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in the near future if he can get past WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia on September 7th in Washington, DC.

That’s the fight that Matthysse and Garcia’s mutual promoters at Golden Boy Promotions want to put together. If they can make that fight and if Matthysse gets past Garcia, then he’s willing to move up in weight to face Mayweather.

Speaking with ole.com.ar, Matthysse said “If they offer, I am willing to go up to 147 to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr.”

That would be a really tough fight for Mayweather to face a big puncher like Matthysse. We saw Mayweather’s last opponent Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero landing a fair amount of shots against him earlier this month, but Guerrero didn’t have any power to speak of but Matthysse does. If he can land his big power shots then he could give Mayweather a lot of problems even if he’s still missing a lot of his shots.

Matthysse definitely will be in the running for that fight if he can get past Garcia in September. Even if Garcia dodged that fight, which is a very distinct possibility, then Matthysse would still be a major candidate because he’s already seen as the best fighter at 140 by a lot of boxing fans, and if Garcia chooses to duck him then it’s be academic at that point that he’s the best.

Matthysse totally dismantled Lamont Peterson last night in New Jersey in three rounds. The fight was over quickly with Matthysse knocking Peterson down once in the 2nd, and twice more in the 3rd to get the stoppage.

Peterson thought the fight shouldn’t have been stopped but it was a good decision because there was a minute left in the round and he was too hurt to survive another minute with the way that Matthysse was punching. He wasn’t tired and he could really hurt Peterson if the referee had chosen to let the fight play out until the bitter end with Matthysee knocking Peterson clean out.
