Berto’s trainer: Mayweather will embarrass Guerrero; Alexander is tougher

mayweather322By Chris Williams: Tony Morgan, the trainer for former IBF/WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto, thinks IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander is a much better option for Floyd Mayweather Jr’s next fight on May 4th fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada rather than a fight against Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero. Mayweather said earlier this week that the 25-year-old Alexander is in the front of the line of his next fight.

Morgan said to Hustleboss.com “The guy’s [Guerrero] had some good wins but if you look at his overall talent, Floyd’s going to embarrass Robert. Devon, by far; Devon’s more talented. He’s fast, he can box. Robert’s kind of right there and just throws punches.”

That about sums up Guerrero’s talent compared to Alexander. Guerrero is someone that is just going to plod forward all night long, taking shots and trying to trying to outwork Mayweather in the same manner that Antonio Margarito used to overwhelm his opponents with punches. But Guerrero doesn’t have the power that Margarito possessed in his prime, and he’s going to be walking into all kinds of nasty shots from Mayweather.

A Mayweather-Guerrero fight isn’t going to be a competitive one, and it’s not to be nearly as interesting as an Alexander vs. Mayweather.

Alexander is a lot tougher because he punches with more speed, he has more power, and he’s not easy to hit. Mayweather will have to beat Alexander in a sharp shooting contest because that’s the way he can be beat. Mayweather isn’t going to overwhelm Alexander with shots because he’s too good of a counter puncher for that to happen.

At the end of the day, Mayweather could end up selecting Alexander over Guerrero because he can get him for a cheaper price. With Freddie Roach talking about Guerrero wanting big money for the Mayweather fight; it’s possible we could see Mayweather pick out Alexander if he can get him for half the price. Why pay Guerrero big money if casual boxing fans don’t know or care who he is in the United States?
