Still questions about Mayweather’s next fight

mayweather46By Mark Havey: Floyd Mayweather has maintained that he will be fighting in may, but has remained tight lipped about who the opponent is set to be. For years Mayweather has been a Pound 4 Pound ranked fighter. Always falling in at 1st or 2nd. He is also the world’s highest paid athlete. So whoever he fights, it will be big.

There was a time when the world wanted him to face Filipino legend Manny Pacquiao. Since his defeat to veteran Jaun Manuel Marquez, no one seems to want that fight. And if I am honest I have not wanted to see that fight for a long time. When you consider Mayweather’s willingness to move between weights, he has alot of options.

Robert Guerrero is a likely candidate. Mayweather has insisted the claims that he is fighting Guerrero are just speculation. This may be true, but he of course he wants to announce the fight himself and build suspense. However, this would be a very good fight. In his victory over Andre Berto, Guerrero proved that he likes to battle. If he does do that against Mayweather it could cost him the fight, yet make it interesting.

Miguel Cotto would also be a good pick. Mayweather’s last fight was a war against Cotto. The fight remained competitive throughout and fans were given a rare chance to see how Mayweather deals with relentless pressure and regular scoring punches. Bleeding from the nose, Mayweather proved that he can exchange with a dangerous puncher. Their last fight was so good I wouldn’t mind watching a rematch. Cotto as the secret opponent is unlikely considering he lost his last fight.

Saul Alvarez is another possibility. Mayweather is fighting on a Mexican holiday, and Canelo is Mexican. He is young and dangerous. His punches are devastating and he is unbeaten. I think that he is ready to step up. I am a big Canelo so this is the fight I hope Mayweather takes. But I think Guerrero is the man we will see Floyd Mayweather face next.
