donaire2132 By Chris Williams: WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (31-1, 20 Ko’s) is hoping that a fight between him and WBC super bantamweight champion Abner Mares can take place in April. Donaire isn’t so confident about a fight between him and WBA super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux taking place if the Mares fight doesn’t happen.

Donaire said to the Manilastandardtoday.com about Rigondeaux moving his next fight date from February to March “They don’t want to do that. [March is an open date for everyone that wants to fight me.”

That’s interesting. I find it hard to believe that Rigondeaux wouldn’t be willing to move his next fight date forward one month in order to get a big money fight with Donaire, a fight that Rigondeaux has been after for well over a year now. I don’t believe that for a second.

I think Rigondeaux would be willing to move his fight date one month ahead if it means he can get a big money fight with Donaire. Why wouldn’t Rigondeaux be interested in doing that? That would be crazy for him not to because it’s the fight he wants and it might be his only chance of getting it because Donaire is talking about moving up to featherweight real soon.

Mares and Donaire can’t fight in March, according to Donaire’s own promoter Bob Arum, as he’s saying that Mares has a mandatory defense coming up for his next fight against Victor Terrazaz. Arum says he won’t make an offer to Mares until after he finishes up with his mandatory defense. I wonder why Donaire isn’t aware of what Arum is saying?

Both of them need to get on the same page because Donaire is saying he wants the Mares fight next, while his promoter Arum says that can’t happen until Mares finishes up with his mandatory. Why isn’t Arum talking about having Mares get Terrazaz to step aside for one fight so that the Donaire-Mares fight can take place? That seems like the logical thing to do. Mares could pay Terrazaz a step aside payment and then the Mares-Donaire fight could take place, if Arum really wants this fight.
