Deontay Wilder hoping to make progress in 2013 towards a world title shot

By Scott Gilfoid: Big 6’7” heavyweight prospect Deontay Wilder (26-0, 26 KO’s) is looking to make a big splash in 2013 by picking up some important wants, getting ranked high, and then possibly getting a world title shot against one of the world champions this year. Wilder, 27, needs to pick up some big scalps to if he wants to get title shot this year.

I mean, there’s no rush because he only just turned 27 and he’s still way ahead of guys like David Price. Tyson Fury might be ahead of Wilder in terms of being ranked and having faced slightly better competition, but he’s not fighting on a higher level. Wilder looks a lot better than Fury despite Wilder not having a top 15 ranking by any of the alphabet sanctioning bodies.

Wilder is coming off of a beautiful performance in stopping a very good Kevlin Price in the 3rd round last month on Showtime. Wilder showed incredible power and patience in destroying Price in that fight.
What Wilder needs is to take on four or five quality fighters in 2013. Here’s who I personally feel Wilder needs to face this year:

Bryant Jennings
Alexander Ustinov
Richard Towers
Cristian Hammer
Edmund Gerber
Denis Boytsov
Manuel Charr

If Wilder can get at least five of those guys in 2013, he’ll get quickly pushed up the rankings to where he’ll be able to get a title shot. However, I think it might be really tough for Wilder to get most of them because his reputation as a tremendous slugger will make it hard for him to get any of them to agree to fight him due to the danger involved. He’s just too big of a puncher right now.

Wilder will have to fight the best guys he can get because I don’t see it being easy for him to get fights. I’d like to see Wilder face some of the guys that Price and/or Fury has been fighting recently so that boxing fans can see the difference between Wilder and those guys.
