That’s no spring chicken for boxing, especially for smaller fighters like the 5’7″ Cotto. Tonight, Cotto will be in against the younger, taller, and faster WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (25-0, 14 KO’s) at Madison Square Garden, in New York.

Cotto, who comes from nearby Puerto Rico, will have the New York fans backing despite the fact that both of Trout’s parents are from New York, and he spent a lot of time visiting there in his youth.

Cotto has made his name in boxing, and he can retire now and feel good about his career. He’s won three world titles during the 11 years that he’s been in the sport, and that’s something he can reflect on when it’s all over for him. However, Trout, 27, sees this as his time to shine and to make his name and he’s not going to let an aging star like Cotto get in his way. Trout is going to let his youth beat the older fighter so that he can make his mark.

Cotto has done well against B level fighters during his career, but each time he’s stepped up against A class fighters such as Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and a prime Antonio Margarito, Cotto has failed. That’s the ugly reality of it. Cotto has beaten an older Shane Mosley [barely], an older Margarito, and guys like Joshua Clottey [barely], Yuri Foreman, Ricardo Mayorga, Carlos Quintana, Zab Judah, DeMarcus Corley and Alfonso Gomez.

Those are B level fighters for the most part. But when Cotto has had to really step it up, he’s failed every time. I see that unfortunately happening again tonight when he steps in there against Trout, who is an A- fighter. Trout isn’t at a full A, but he’s definitely an A- fighter and I expect him to win tonight.
