Image: Pacquiao was ahead on the scorecards when he was stopped by MarquezBy Jason Kim: Manny Pacquiao has nothing to be ashamed of for being knocked out last night by Juan Manuel Marquez. Pacquiao was well in control of the fight at the time he ran into a short right hand from Marquez in the 6th that knocked him out. All three judges had Pacquiao ahead by identical 47-46 scores and he looked like he had the bleeding Marquez ready to be knocked out at the time tragedy struck.

Things like that happen in boxing, and Pacquiao wasn’t fighting recklessly at all. I thought he was well in control of the fight after having been knocked down in the 3rd.

When you take away the two knockdowns that Marquez recorded, Pacquiao dominated the all of the action. He was faster, his shots were landing cleaner, and he was controlling the fight with his superior boxing skills. The only problem Pacquiao had was on defense.

If he blocked that right hand from Marquez in the 3rd, and not walked into the short right hand from Marquez in the 6th, Pacquiao would have won the fight no problem. The right hand that Marquez hit Pacquiao with that knocked him out was a shot that only traveled a little over a foot in distance.

It was a really short punch and it’s rare for fighters to generate that kind of power with a punch with that little travel distance. Who could blame Pacquiao for coming at Marquez from that distance because no one punches with huge power from short range?

It was just that Marquez really muscled up his body and he had more power than what Pacquiao was expecting him to have, because in their last fight Marquez was around the same weight but not a huge puncher like he was last night. The strength training that Marquez’s trainer Angel Hernandez did with him really made him into a much bigger puncher, and I think that Pacquiao wasn’t ready for that kind of power from him.

It was a lucky punch that Marquez landed. If you take that punch away, Pacquiao would have won the fight. In a rematch, Pacquiao won’t make the same mistakes and I think he’ll definitely beat Marquez in a 5th fight.
