Image: Straight Up Mayweather - PacquiaoBy Rusty Nate: For those of you that may have read my previous articles you will know that bias and pointless criticism is not something that I look to write. I keep my articles as close to the mark as possible but without ever being one sided.

With that in mind I thought I would tackle the old Manny Mayweather / Floyd Pacquiao situation in the way I see it.

First off I will start by saying – I know there is no way to make both sets of fans happy with an article, there is always going to be haters from both sides but I will try and keep things level. Oh and I don’t actually believe my self that the fight will ever happen now unfortunately. But I guess the really question is “if it does will it really have any significance”?

Sure both fighters will make a shed load of cash regardless of the purse splits but other than that and a name on the record of either fighter will it really be a fight that will go down as historic or an all time great fight. I seriously doubt it now.

In my eyes if they were to fight I see Pac’s footwork as being to slow to land the punches he would need to in order to affect Mayweather. By the same token I think Floyd would more than likely have “points win” in his mind before the first bell even sounds.

I am of the impression these days that when it comes to a Mayweather fight regardless of the opponent it comes down to….can you hit Mayweather cleanly and frequently enough to get noticed. We all know he is a defensive genius as far as boxers go and those skills can win him a fight against anyone, even the best of the division. The judges would be seeing the occasion glancing punch land and a lot of punches missing. This fact alone means that Floyd has the ability to win a round in the judges eyes without having to land as many punches as his opponent.

Pacquiao by the same reckoning has won fights on the judge’s cards that are considered controversial simply because he throws more punches than his opponents. The Marquez 3 fight was a prime example……..the majority of people watching that fight by the 12th round were thinking Marquez has this one in the bag. The fight went to Pacquiao and the world was up in arms about the decision. But stats do show Pac did land more punches.

I find these two points regarding each fighter as ironic…………

Mayweather can throw less punches, land less, look better than the opponent and win rounds.

Pacquiao can throw more punches, land more punches, but looks like he is being given a lesson and still win rounds.

Like I said before I don’t believe this fight will happen, regardless of what Roger Mayweather says but if it did I certainly don’t expect it to be a Morales, Barrera epic or a Hagler, Hearn slug fest or even a Castillo, Corrales war………..if I had to liken the potential super fight to anything I would say its more than likely going to be a Lennox Lewis, David Tua affair. A good fight to have seen but ultimately it would be the aggressive, powerful pressure fighter trying to find a way to get to the Master of boxing and defense. Although its interesting to think that Rahman and McCall managed it and who would have thought those results were ever going to happen!

Just something to ponder.

I hope this fight does happen to avoid the age old question of who would win ringing around the forums for another 10 years!
