Golovkin waiting to see whether Geale will fight him or give up his WBA strap

Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez sees Geale just letting the WBA stripping him of the title, and then focusing on defending his IBF middleweight title against his mandatory challenger 38-year-old Sam Soliman in what should be a much easier fight for Geale compared to facing the hard hitting Golovkin.

Sanchez said to thatboxingvoice.com “I can see [Gary] Shaw allowing Geale to be stripped of the title [WBA]. I think he feels the fight needs to simmer, but built up.”

That’s not how I feel. I think Shaw is hesitant about putting his fighter Geale in with someone with the kind of power that Golovkin has, because it would be far too dangerous to throw the relatively light hitting Geale in with a boxer/puncher like Golovkin. It would be a bad night if that were to happen for Geale, because he doesn’t match up with Golovkin in terms of power, speed or boxing ability. It might just turn out to be a huge mismatch if that fight were to take place.

Shaw said “I can assure you Geale will not vacate.”

In that case, he’s going to take a beating against Golovkin and get knocked out. That’s a given. I really don’t have a lot of faith in what some promoters say, although Shaw is usually a pretty straight shooter in saying what his fighters will do or not do. Still, I see Shaw directing Geale towards the path of least resistance by putting him in with the #2 IBF Soliman. That’s an easier fight in terms of facing a guy with a lot less power, but also it’s a fight that would make a lot more money than a Geale vs. Golovkin bout.

Soliman is Australian, so it’s a fight that will attract a lot of fellow Australians who are more familiar with Soliman compared to Golovkin. The bad part is that with two titles, Geale has different pulls being made on him. On one hand he’s got the WBA ordering that he face Golovkin soon or else getting stripped, while on the other hand Geale has his IBF mandatory challenger Soliman that is ready for him to fight. Soliman is not only the less risky fight but it’s also the better money fight. What do you think most people would do if they were in a similar predicament as Geale? I think they’d go for the Soliman fight and let the WBA strips them of their WBA title. It would probably be for the best for Geale because he doesn’t have the power to beat Golovkin.
