Image: Sergio Martinez may need to KO Chavez Jr. to ensure he gets the winBy Dan Ambrose: Sergio Martinez (49-2-2, 28 KO’s) kind of has the deck stacked against him against WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-0-1, 32 KO’s) on September 15th, because in the history of boxing when a smaller money fighter faces a guy that brings in huge cash like Chavez Jr. does, the lesser money fighter tends to lose. For some reason the big money fighters tend to get the close decisions handed their way.

Martinez is going to have to really put a hurting on Chavez Jr. if he wants to guarantee that he wins the fight. Chavez Jr. is the champion and he’s just the challenger. The champions tend to get decisions go their way, and being a popular champion gives Chavez Jr. an even bigger advantage in this fight. He might need to do a whole lot in order to get a decision in this fight.

Chavez Jr. is a highly popular fighter due to his famous father Julio Cesar Chavez and he seems to have found a good situation by being able to melt down from 180 to fight in the middleweight division. The extra weight clearly helps Chavez Jr. win fights. Being bigger than his opponents has definitely helped Chavez Jr win at this level in a way that he probably won’t be able to do if he had to fight in a weight class closer to his actual weight like super middleweight or light heavyweight.

If you put Chavez Jr. in with guys like Carl Froch, Andre Ward and Mikkel Kessler, Chavez Jr. is going to struggle badly. But by dehydrating down from 180 to fight in the middleweight division, he’s found a spot where he’s got an advantage. The day that Chavez Jr. can no longer make weight for the division is the day that he’ll likely have to deal with no longer being a world champion.
