Image: Khan open to a Peterson rematch if victorious over GarciaBy William Mackay: Amir Khan (26-2, 18 KO’s) may stick around the 140 pound division a little longer than he originally planned if he can defeat WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (23-0, 14 KO’s) on July 14th. Khan would like to avenge his loss to Lamont Peterson, who made Khan look bad in beating him last December.

Khan told the dailystar.co.uk “I would, 100 per cent, consider fighting him again. Even when it got called off I wanted to fight him…Maybe we could fight again if he’s not banned for life…I would love to set the record straight against him, after he took my titles, but I will…leave it to my promoter.”

Khan must be kidding himself if he actually thinks Peterson may be banned for life because of this. I don’t know how they do things in the UK, but in the U.S you don’t get banned for life on your first offense. Seriously, banned for life? Where did that come from?

If Khan leaves it to his promoter then he’ll likely never fight Peterson again, because the word is that Golden Boy Promotions isn’t eager to see Khan facing Peterson again. They obviously would like to see Khan move on to bigger and better things. However, when it’s all said and done, they might have wished they had chosen to put Khan back in with Peterson, because Khan is asking to get knocked out over and over again when he moves up to the welterweight division. There are too many quality fighters up there and unless Golden Boy is going to target the WBA paper champion Paulie Malignaggi, I can’t see Khan winning any titles.

If you put Khan in with the winner of the Randall Bailey vs. Devon Alexander fight, Khan will have huge problems because those guys are too dangerous for him. Bailey has one punch power and is the biggest puncher at 147, whereas Alexander is also a stronger puncher but with excellent hand speed. Alexander can fight well on the inside or the outside. Khan won’t beat that guy, and he’ll take a lot of punishment against him. Alexander is a lot stronger at 147 compared to when he was fighting at 140.

Khan needs to worry about just trying to get past Garcia on July 14th, because this guy is going to be a huge handful for Khan. Garcia has never been beaten, and he’s pretty much dominated everyone he’s faced. He had problems against Erik Morales, but much of that was because Garcia wasn’t motivated because of the respect he had for the older fighter. Against Khan, he won’t be taking it easy on him. He’ll be looking to KO him.
