Fury to prove himself against Maddalone on Saturday

Image: Fury to prove himself against Maddalone on SaturdayBy Scott Gilfoid: Undefeated heavyweight contender Tyson Fury (18-0, 13 KO’s) has a perfect opponent for him to look good against this Saturday night in 38-year-old Vinny Maddalone (35-7, 26 KO’s) at the Hand Arena, Clevedon, Somerset, UK. Fury, 24, doesn’t seem particularly interested in facing better fighters, so Maddalone is about the best you can hope for from Fury until he gets a title shot one of these days.

Fury claims he’ll be the WBC mandatory challenger by December. Fat chance of that happening. It’ll take more than a win over a B level fighter like Maddalone to put Fury in the driver’s seat for a mandatory shot. I have a feeling that even if Fury was made the mandatory challenger for Vitali, he’s still turn down an offer from Vitali. But that’s probably not what Fury really wants. He’s likely thinking that Vitali will be retiring after he decimates #7 WBC challenger Manuel Charr on September 8th, and then Fury could fight for the vacant WBC strap against one of the top contenders.

It sounds like a nice scheming plan except if Vitali’s brother IBF/WBA/WBO Wladimir Klitschko steps up and decides he wants to go after Vitali’s vacant WBC strap. We then could likely see Fury back down and continue with the fights against the Maddalones and the Martin Rogans while Fury waits for Wladimir to either get old and retire or get old to the point where he’s looking shot enough for Fury to beat him. I hope Fury doesn’t plan on waiting too long, because there’s a future star on the horizon in the heavyweight division in 6’7″ American Deontay Wilder, and he’ll be ready to take over the heavyweight title reins as soon as Wladimir steps down.

As for the Fury-Maddalone fight this Saturday, Fury should win this fight in flying colors by an easy knockout. Maddalone is getting up there in age and he’s been beaten plenty of times by Evander Holyfield, Jean Marc Mormeck, Tomasz Adamek, Denis Boytsov and Brian Minto. If those guys were able to beat Maddalone, then I’m sure Fury is probably good enough to beat Maddalone as well. I still think Maddalone has a puncher’s chance in this fight.
