Haye has to let his hands go if he wants to beat Chisora

Image: Haye has to let his hands go if he wants to beat ChisoraBy William Mackay: Since moving up to the heavyweight division in 2008, David Haye (25-2, 23 KO’s) has proven to be incredibly economical with his punches. It doesn’t seem to matter whom he’s facing; Haye still is very frugal in letting his shots go.

It almost cost him the fight against Nikolay Valuev, and it definitely was a huge factor in Haye losing to IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko last July.

On July 14th, Haye will be returning from a year layoff to face the 245 pound Dereck Chisora at Upton Park in London, UK. Haye says he’s going to punish Chisora and make an example of him. However, it’s going to be tough for Haye if he’s only throwing between 10 to 20 punches per round. He’s not going to beat Chisora with that kind of output, because Chisora is capable of matching that with ease.

Chisora doesn’t have the greatest conditioning but he can definitely throw 30 punches per round no problem. This means that Haye is going to have to let his hands go a lot more than usual unless he’s able to take Chisora out with a flurry of shots in the early going. That’s something Haye might want to try, because leaving Chisora in there for the full 12 rounds will mean a lot of running for Haye. I’m not sure that Haye has the conditioning to run for 12 rounds, not after being out of action for one year.

What Haye needs to do is to try and jump Chisora in the first two rounds and just unload with everything but the kitchen sink. Chisora doesn’t have the hand speed nor the power on the inside to match Haye if he fights like this. We could see a very quick fight if Haye lets go with everything that he has in his arsenal while the fight is still young. Chisora has been able to stay in with some big heavyweights Tyson Fury, Robert Helenius and Vitali Klitschko, but none of them had fast hand speed or explosive power like Haye.

That’s the thing that could really trip Chisora up. He’s been patting himself on the back for being able to survive against those big heavyweights, but none of those guys have the hand speed or the raw power that Haye possesses. Chisora could be in for a shock in this fight if Haye lets his hands go early on.
