Image: Mayweather to make $32 million + PPV upside for Cotto fight tomorrow nightBy Chris Williams: Unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 26 KO’s) is set to make $32 million plus an additional bundle of cash from the pay-per-view for his mega fight tomorrow night against WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (37-2, 30 KO’s) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mayweather could make close to $40 million or more depending on how well the PPV numbers are for the fight.

Cotto is set to make $8 million, but that figure could increase substantially depending on the PPV upside. Cotto reportedly received a little more for his fight against Manny Pacquiao in 2009. However, the Pacquiao-Cotto fight only drew 1.25 million PPV buys. Tomorrow night’s fight between Mayweather and Cotto is expected to go beyond 1.4 million, which means that Cotto could get his biggest pay day ever. If the fight goes up past 1.6 and above, Cotto will be smiling from ear to ear even if he does take a pounding and gets knocked out by Mayweather.

Cotto is the clear underdog in this fight due to his lack of hand speed, defense, foot speed and all the wars he’s been in. There’s no doubt that Cotto will be more than a handful for Mayweather in the first six rounds of the fight, but unfortunately for Cotto this is a 12 round bout and he’s going to be struggling once in goes into the second half.

Without great defensive skills or stamina, Cotto’s face is going to take a lot of punishment. I expect him to get cut up badly and end up even more swollen than he was in his loss to Pacquiao in 2009. Cotto ran most of that fight, and I can see him doing the same with Mayweather if things go badly early in the fight. If Cotto is able to hold his own in the first part of the fight, then he’ll look to exchange. But if things go badly for him, he’ll run all night long and just look to survive.
