Image: Chavez Jr. still may not fight Sergio MartinezBy Dan Ambrose: Sergio Martinez signed an agreement yesterday that states that he’ll get a shot against the winner of the June 16th fight between WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Andy Lee. However, Chavez Jr. still hasn’t signed the contact, and that’s the guy that Martinez badly wants to fight. There’s a question mark whether Chavez Jr. will sign the contract, but even if he does, he’s likely to vacate his World Boxing Council title if he struggles badly against Lee on the 16th of June.

It doesn’t matter if Chavez Jr. signs the contract or not. The only thing that happens with signing the contract is it saves him from possibly being stripped of his title by the WBC for failing to fight his mandatory challenger Martinez. Signing the contract will prevent that from happening and Chavez Jr. can still take the fight with Lee as the WBC middleweight champ. However, if things look bad for Chavez Jr. in winning a narrow decision or if he is promoter advises him not to fight Martinez, then it’s possible we could see Chavez Jr. vacating the WBC title and getting out of having to face Martinez and take a likely embarrassing defeat against him.

Martinez’s promoter Lou Dibella is hoping that Chavez Jr. will fight Martinez, but that’s all it can be. The contract will mean nothing even if Chavez Jr. signs it, because he can always vacate his WBC title after the Lee fight. There’s a good chance that Chavez Jr. will get beat anyway, although it may take a KO for Lee to win the fight because it’s in Texas. Lee may need to trounce Chavez Jr. to win a decision, but I can’t even see it then. I think he’ll need a knockout to walk out of Texas with the win, and I don’t know if he’ll get a KO. Chavez Jr. can take a good shot. His trainer Freddie Roach will have Chavez Jr. jabbing and moving all night long, and avoiding exchanges with Lee.
