Image: Roach says he knows 'Mystery man,' says he doesn't work for IBFBy Chris Williams: Amir Khan’s trainer Freddie Roach thinks Khan’s loss to Lamont Peterson should be changed to a no-contest of there should be an ordered rematch due to the mystery man seen talking with World Boxing Association supervisor Michael Welsh during the Khan-Peterson fight.

Even through the man wasn’t speaking with the judges, Roach still thinks this is enough to have Peterson’s win taken away and Khan getting his belts back. Roach goes on to say that he knows the person and that he has come to Roach’s Wild card gym in the past. Roach says he doesn’t work for the IBF as far as he knows.

Roach told the BBC Sport “He comes to my gym. He came to the Olympic training centre and I actually had him removed one time. I told the coaches: ‘There’s no need for him to be here.”

As for the Khan-Peterson fight, Roach says “It should be a no-contest or a mandated rematch. You’ve got a guy sitting besides [Welsh] that’s talking about who’s winning round and so forth, We can only speculate on what they were talking about but most likely they were talking about the fight.”

Whether this guy was talking to the WBA supervisor or not, it doesn’t mean that he had any effect on the judges themselves. I can understand why Roach would want the Khan loss erased since it reflects on him and the poor job Roach did in training Khan. I think Khan needs to fire Roach because there’s no way, I mean no way that fighter like Khan should have been sent out there with a complete lack of any ability to fight on the inside against an inside fighter like Peterson. Did all Roach teach Khan in the last two years is how to run around the ring shoving people and grabbing their heads to twist on them?

Roach obviously wants the results to be changed so it doesn’t make him look so bad. It’s too late; Khan always looked terrible and the Jeanie is out of the bottle now. You can’t hide how awful Khan looked by the WBA or IBF taking the win away from Peterson just because some bold guy sat down next to one of the supervisors and struck up a conversation. He didn’t speak with the judges; he spoke with the WBA supervisor.
Roach said about whether Khan would beat Peterson in a rematch: “100 percent, yes.”

That’s what Roach said last time they fought. They clearly picked out Peterson thinking it was going to be an easy fight for Khan because Peterson was easily beaten by Timothy Bradley by a lopsided 12 round decision in 2009. This was supposed to be an easy fight for Khan to show off his skills in front of the U.S fans to win Khan more fans in the U.S. They didn’t want a hard fight because if they did they would have selected Breidis Prescott or a much needed rematch against the hard hitting Marcos Maidana. Peterson was clearly picked because he had no power to speak of compared to those guys.

However, instead of the fight being an easy one for Khan, like it had been for Bradley, Khan fell apart completely after the 3rd round when Peterson was still standing. When Peterson battered Khan in the 4th round with some body shots, Khan started running and fouling from that point on. As the rounds went on, Khan looked worse and worse, as his form fell completely apart under the pressure from Peterson and Khan looked like he was in full retreat like a conquered army.

You could see Roach talking a mile a minute in between rounds trying to give Khan some valuable advice that would keep Peterson off, but the best that Roach could come up with was to keep running and to tie Peterson up. Khan kept running alright, but he added a lot of shoving and yanking down on Peterson’s head. The shoving ended up costing Khan two points for his failure to follow simple instructions told to him by the referee.

Khan wasn’t supposed to lose this fight. Golden Boy has put a lot of money into trying to make him a star, and they’re putting a lot of money into having this loss removed. But it’s kind of pointless. Khan has already been exposed and there’s nothing that can change that even if the IBF and WBA overturn the results based on the huge pressure they’re getting from Golden Boy.
