It seems like the jab is Ortiz’s main weapon of choice followed by a left hand that comes directly behind the jab.

This could be Ortiz’s strategy to defeat Floyd Mayweather Jr. on September 17th. Ortiz’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya has given him advice for how to beat Mayweather, and you’d have to belief that jabbing is likely the main advice that De La Hoya is giving him.

De La Hoya recently said that he would have beaten Mayweather if he had stuck to using his jab instead of trying to punch with him in their fight in 2007. De La Hoya is convinced that he would have won if he had stuck to just jabbing Mayweather. As it was, De La Hoya built up a sizable lead in the first six rounds by jabbing exclusively against Mayweather.

This is likely what Ortiz will be doing against Mayweather on the 17th. Can Ortiz be disciplined enough to continue to use his jab round after round instead of trying to slug it out like he did against Andre Berto? I have my doubts. Ortiz is someone that fights with emotion and he’ll likely be respond with anger once he starts taking some hard shots from Mayweather.

Ortiz would be better off continuing to jab Mayweather, but if you look at Ortiz’s past fights where he immediately attempted to retaliate after getting hit, it’s difficult to see Ortiz fighting with the discipline he’ll need to beat Mayweather.
