Mayweather: If Pacquiao wanted the fight we would have fought already

Image: Mayweather: If Pacquiao wanted the fight we would have fought alreadyBy Chris Williams: Floyd Mayweather Jr. doesn’t like how he’s the one that’s criticized for the Manny Pacquiao-Mayweather fight not being made when he’s made it clear from day one that all Pacquiao has to do is agree to the tests that he asked him for in checking for illegal performance enhancing drugs.

Mayweather points out in an interview at fighthype.com that all wanted for Pacquiao to do is take the tests, and finished by saying “If the guy wanted the fight, we could have been done had the fight. Y’all know this.”

What Mayweather is talking about is during his negotiations with Pacquiao before early in 2010, Mayweather asked for drug testing up to 14 days before the fight, and Pacquiao said he would take drug testing up to 24 days. That was the golden opportunity for the fight to get made, yet Pacquiao wanted nearly a month of no testing before he would fight Mayweather.

That was the chance to get the Mayweather fight, and it went down the drain with that failure to move to Mayweather’s position. It all sounds so ridiculous because that’s a lot of time in between drug tests and it’s not surprising Mayweather said forget it. That’s basically been it as far as a fight getting made. Had Pacquiao simply agreed to the drug testing that Mayweather wanted, they would have fought because everything else was agreed on terms of the split of the revenue, gloves size, ring size and all that. It came down to the time in between tests that Pacquiao wanted.

And now Pacquiao’s promoter is balking at the idea of having the USADA test Pacquiao, which is the agency that Mayweather wants. Pacquiao could tell Arum that he’s okay with the USADA I suppose if he wanted to, and we’d have a fight, but that doesn’t seem to he happening. So who’s at fault here for the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight not getting made? Mayweather Jr. for simply wanting drug tests or Pacquiao for wanting to have a time gap in between the tests or his promoter for wanting a different agency to conduct the tests?
