Mares wants a fight with Donaire

By Jason Kim: Unbeaten WBC Silver bantamweight champion Abner Mares (21-0-1, 12 Ko’s) wants a shot against WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (26-1, 18 KO’s). Mares’ bantamweight finals tournament fight with Joseph Agbeko went down the tubes yesterday after Agbeko collapsed after a flight due to back ailment. With Agbeko now out of the tournament final and no replacement opponents found, Mares is now free to look for his next fight. A bout against Donaire would seem to be the perfect solution.

In an interview at examiner.com, Mares said “I would like to fight Donaire. Now that Nonito has signed with Golden Boy, I think it will be a lot easier to make that fight.”

This would be a good fight for both of them. I can’t see Mares doing much in this bout other than getting knocked out but it would be a good experience for him to fight someone as good as Donaire. Mares struggled in his two fights in the bantamweight tournament, fighting to a 12 round draw with IBF bantamweight champion Yonnhy Perez in May 2010, and then winning a controversial 12 round split decision over Vic Darchiyan in his last fight in the bantamweight tournament last December. Mares throws a lot of punches but is easy to hit. It’s scary to think what Donaire would do to Mares with his big power and fast hands coupled with Mares’ nonexistent defense. This could be a quick knockout for Donaire.

Donaire stopped WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel in the 2nd round in February. Donaire made Montiel look bad in beating him. However, Donaire’s current situation is still up in the air right now due to his promotional problems between Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank. Donaire might not be available to fight anyone for a while until this issue is solved.
