Manny Pacquiao: Best Paid Athlete in 2010

By Frank Livingstone: ESPN Magazine has recently came out with the list of the highest paid athlete in each sport in 2010 and rated Manny Pacquiao and Alex Rodriguez, professional baseball player, as the highest paid athlete.

It looks at 30 different sports and lists the highest paid athlete in each sport. Pacquiao and Rodriguez both earned a staggering $32 million dollars in 2010 which came from their direct earnings and from the individual salary or contracts. The amount did not include endorsement money and sponsorships.

The $32 million earnings came from his two bouts with Joshua Clottey and Antonio Margarito in 2010. It is amazing that his income was above the $24.8 million dollars that NBA superstar, Kobe Bryant, earned in 2010.

It is truly a rags to riches story for Manny Pacquiao who dropped out of high school due to extreme poverty and started his boxing career so he can support his poor family. His upcoming fight with Sugar Shane Mosley on May 7 will reportedly earn him a guaranteed $15 million dollars plus his share in the Pay Per view numbers. The Pacquiao/Mosley bout which is to be held at MGM was sold out more than three weeks before the actual fight. This is incredible considering the Mayweather/Mosley fight last year had more than 1,000 seats vacant at fight night at the same venue. This is despite the boxing experts’ view that the fight is a mismatch in Pacquiao’s favour.

Whatever the boxing experts say, whenever Manny Pacquiao fights you could rest assured the number one pound for pound will give his best and entertain his boxing fans at fight night. So the $32 million dollar question is, Will Manny have his day with Floyd Mayweather Jr inside the ring or can Pacquiao extend his success this year and be the best paid athlete in 2011.

It is very confusing here: $32M each for Pacquiao and Alex Rodriguez is considered the highest amount received by any athlete in the world in 2010. Floyd Junior said he received at least $70M each fight he had in 2010 or any year. Which is the right report?

  • wellknown says:

so much for that money thing between Floyd and Manny. Our salary is just a loose change to them. Whether he earn more than the other is not debatable. Money isn’t the issue, it’s how you live your life in the sight of people and in the sight of God. When we all die, we won’t even bring a penny. But the legacy continues.

  • Cybreed says:

Well it doesn’t matter how much Floyd made last year, more or less than Pacman…keep this inmind, Pacman spend his money back in the Philippines and Floyd spend his money here, so do the math, it’s a simple arithmetic. Also keep this inmind Floyd may ever be a better fighter than Pacman, but Pacman is and educated man, does Floyd is? So who do you think is better person now? think about it…

  • Ros says:

Where is Mayweather? He and his fanatic fans are bragging about the 60 millions he earned in Mosleys fight. Seems he lied again, but thinking about it, what´s new?

  • Killa says:

    @gr8boxer

I agree to disagree with what your saying, Floyd demanded 100 1st. then he was supposedly offered 50, you never know what’s true and whats not true because Floyd never comes public like Top Rank/ Bob Arum. Nevertheless, when Floyd fought Oscar. Oscar got a guaranteed 52 million (Fact) thats before PPV buys bro. Floyd got 20.5 (FACT). So if you throw in teh PPV buys just add 20 or 25 million to what Oscar got. But the fight overall with the gate, they grossed over 300 million (FACT)! So with that being said based on number, estimated Floyd vs. Manny will easily do 400 to 500 million. The fighter deserve the big buck there putting there lives on the line. No here’s where the issue starts, Bob Arum is already worried that if Floyd gets 100. Then how much is he gonna get of whats left! thats the biggest issue, that crook gets 38% of what Manny makes and then Golden Boy has rights to manny also. So concluding, Floyd isn’t actually asking for to much; people just dont know the in’s and out’s of how much those mega fighst make. Floyd does kuz he know’s both sides of being a boxer which he was under Bob Arum, and now being the BOSS of himself. Just check the total grossing numbers on the Floyd and Oscar fight and you’ll see what I mean.

  • gr8boxer says:

What I observed is that the other fighter who lived halfway around the world, doesn’t want to submit to RBT but agreed later. Maybe it is out of principle and he does not want to be pushed around. If it is the case then it is something that money can’t buy. I heard that this one offered $50M to the other boxer and he asked for $100M. This lead me to believe that it they will agree to give him $100M, then he will ask for $150M. If this is the case, then this fight is never going to happen for sure.

  • Jazz Do It says:

Floydie has to buy his ringside ticket in the blackmarket to get into the May 7 fight. Surely he can afford two tickets with his mate 50 cent at $25K each.

  • DIZZLE says:

If Floyd decided to step in the ring during the post fight interviews and calls Pacman out…Pac will say, “I will fight you right here right now, i can go 12 more rounds today and I will take any test in between rounds. I will beat you down in front of your family in your own hood.”

Then Floyd will say, “Wait…I need a tune-up.” Then he’ll run.

  • MbfromPhilly says:

Pacfans are obsessed with Floyd Mayweather! I believe Floyd will be at the Pacquiao vs Mosely fight, and will pull somewhat of a Shane Mosely move and put Pacquiao on the spot in front of millions by asking him to take the test to make the fight! All of Pacquiao’s fans will hear him stuttering and lookng to Freddie Roach for help! Just watch.

  • carlos says:

Manny fought like 3 fihgts to make Floyds total in one year and that is the truth, And When floyd sells all the front rows u see all the Actors All the top basketbaal plyera all the football stars THAT IS WHAT ALL PROMOTERS WANT TO SEE FIRST AND THE REST IS GRAVY, (ppv).

Crazy ain.t it? most revenue comeing from the US.while floyd is on a sabaticle he is dominating the boxing sstage,Not unlike the great Muhamad.its been awhile now since Muhamad Ali riened, and you sure wish you could see him take on the Klitschcos.Ali would I believe beat wlad ,A close fight with vitali,And a barn burner with Lewis.got carried away in time ,It now is Pacquiaos time.

  • Jazz Do It says:

The Forbes List for 2010 is due in a couple of months. In 2009, Tiger Woods top the list of athleteswith $105 million and Floyd was second with $65 million. Pacquiao was no 8 with 42 million. 18 athletes made the top 100 Forbes list.

It would be interesting how Pacquiao and Mayweather did in 2010. I expect Pacquiao will rank higher than Mayweather in 2010.

  • Floyd Who??? says:

Every accolades given to Pacquiao sn another thorn in Floydie’s head. Fighter of the Decade, Eight Time champ at different weights, cover on Time Magazine, private audience with Barrack Obama and now the Best Paid athlete in 2010. When will Floyd’s misery end??????

GET INTO THE RING WITH PACQUIAO TO END YOUR MISERY, FLOYDIE

  • Killa says:

    @DIZZLE

first off you weirdo, nobody know’s what race you are? The median salary was based on asians, and yes they were higher that MOST DEFINITELY WASNT BECAUSE OF Philippino’s! Lol! My neighbor is Philipino, they are not even considered asain they are of the pacific islanders. We dont need to get into race, were here for boxing. So I’d just figured i share that with you kuz I catch you on here quite often being very ignorant.

  • DIZZLE says:

Last I checked, Filipinos have a much higher median average salary than Blacks in the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

Marinate on that Anonymous. You wanna come on here and play the race card with me? Bring it fool.

  • dan says:

Porbes numbers for Floyd came from June ,2009 to May 30,2010 with total income of 62 Million Dollars, fight with Marquez (20M) and Mosley (22.2M) plus endorsement. Tiger wood on top of 102 Millions.
ESPN numbers for Manny came from Jan 1,2010 to Dec 32, 2010 with the total income of 32 Million. Just the salary, endorsement not included which Alex Rodrigues and Manny tied on first place. If endorsement included, Lebron James is # 1.
If you noticed, Floyd earned more money than Pac’s per fight lasr year, but I don’t know about this year if Floyd doesn’t fight.

  • Da UnKnown Comic says:

So the ppv buys count as endorsements or sponsorships? Manny made $32 million in TWO fights in 2010. Mayweather made $40 million in ONE fight. I’m confused here.

manny actually did not get paid 32 million lst year.27 percent of his purse goes to arum. 13 percent of every one of his fights goes to delahoya since the idiot signed to two promotional companies on the same day got sued and lost. thats 40 percent of his check that gets taken before taxes.

kind of funny that writer forgot to mention that floyd was #2 most paid athlete last year and funny how he forgot to mention that tickets for mosley manny are way cheaper then mosley floyd was and it was sold out in a day not to mention the 30000 close caption tickets sold. one of the highest at the door money making boxing events ever and top 6 money making fights of all time…..

    @ DIZZLE

Did i say that Kobe and Lebron got Cutman????????

I wanted to point out that big money in Boxing is rare. Pac and Floyd are elite fighter but ordinary NBA professionals make that kind of money. Manny is the only Boxer who has a deal with Nike, if i am not wrong he gets paid 5 Million a year from Nike. But nearly every NBA Player has a f.cking shoe contract and only average guys get 5 Million a year. Lebron got a 90 Million Dollar contract with nike when he was 18 y old.

  • DIZZLE says:

@Troy….though I tend to agree with you that Floyd probably won’t show up on May 7th, I’d love for him to show he has some balls and attend the fight. Let’s see if he can man up and face the 100,000+ Filipinos who will converge on the Vegas Strip that weekend.

  • DIZZLE says:

    Manny Pacquiao: “I’m Floyd’s idol.”

What Floyd can do, Manny can do better. The only thing Floyd has going for him is his “0″. That’s why he’s holding onto to it for dear life. LMFAO.

  • The Fighter says:

Kobe and L. james has no corner man and trainer, Paquiao also has a lot of sponsors!

  • DIZZLE says:

@Knock…ever heard of the saying, “’tis better to give than receive” ??

What Manny gives out through his generosity, he receives back TENFOLD. You just don’t know it or see it.

BTW…while Floyd recently bragged about winning $14K on sports betting, no one ever knew that Manny won almost $100K at Commerce Casino here in Los Angeles during his promotional tour. He was laughing at Floyd all the way to the bank.

  • TROY!!! says:

@Knock! Kobe and Lebron has no trainer and corner man, use your brain before posting!!! Manny is also an endoser!

  • Knock! says:

After Bob Arum, Freddie Roach, Alex Ariza, Miguel Diaz and every Cornerman and the taxes are paid, i am sure Manny is lucky if he gets 15 Million out of that 32. Its still great money. Compared to other elite Athletes its peanuts. Lebron made 40 Million just with sponsors and endorsements. Kobe even more.

  • TROY!!! says:

Floyd will never watch live Shane vs Manny after the booed he got form American fans, what more on this fight ‘coz there will be a lot of Pinoys watching!!!

  • DIZZLE says:

lace em up…yes we’d all like to see Pac-Floyd get it on right now. But Floyd remains silent on his boxing plans therefore it’s on him. Plus he’s got his legal mess which he’s brought upon himself. I’d like to see the fight happen in Nov or May 2012 but no later.

I have the slightest feeling that PBF will attend the Pac-SSM fight. If he does…there will be fireworks all over the place.

  • The Fighter says:

at present Paquiao is the highest paid athlete ‘coz Floyds dissapear when Manny arrives, and itelligent boxing fans knows the very reasons why? Floyd will be back in boxing in need of money but he will never ever fight Manny!!!

  • lacem up says:

Drizz…No you did not offend me really. I just wanted to say that about my home town! In all honesty if May/Pac doesn’t happen with in like a year I don’t think I ,myself , would be interested any more! Fighters that move forward and rely on mostly offense like Pacquiao tend to hit a wall so to speak if you know what I mean. After so many wars in the ring they tend to flame out after so many fights, it takes its toll. A defensive fighter like Floyd could prob fight into his 40s at one fight a year! lol.. I personally dont want to see a wash out with Pac moving forward and Floyd pot shotting all night. I want to see the fight NOW while Pac is in his prime!

  • tangaka says:

Got a Cheat Your floyd was a boring fighter

  • DIZZLE says:

If mine was trash, then what does that make yours?

    Rhetorical question.

  • DIZZLE says:

Pac is smart. He lets his lawyers handle the stupid drug accusations made by the Mayweathers.

The sanctioning bodies and boxing commissions are smart. They’ve been around for 100 years. If they had an ounce of suspicion that Pac was using PEDs, they’d have launched a thorough investigation A LONG DAM TIME AGO. But they know what’s up, that’s why they let Pac do his thing.

Pac fans are smart. They simply focus on what Pac does in the ring and what Pac does for his countrymen.

Floyd fans are dumb. They’ve been harping on the same drug accusation for the last two years EVEN THOUGH NOBODY WORTH NOTING EXCEPT THE MAYWEATHERS ARE SAYING PAC is on PEDs.

  • Gotta cheat us to beat us says:

If Paq fans really wanted to see them fight, they would place pressure on him to accept testing along with Floyd to make this super fight. I get the feeling his fans rather not see them fight just to be able to say Manny can beat him in a imaginary match. All the talk would have ended by now if 1 fighter didn’t refuse something so simple. If Manny is better than Floyd he won’t prove it by fighting his leftovers. Set a standard fight someone new and dangerous not has Beens.

  • Lapu Lapu says:

I agree with Chris from NYC. If PAC keeps on winning, Floyd will keep on whining.
    SO TRUE Chris.

  • Chris from NYC says:

Sponsorship and endorsement fees usually forms a big part of an athlete’s income. Floyd Jr’s sponsorship value is going down compared to Pacquiao’s. Floyd’s erratic behavior is turning a lot of the major sponsors off (Gillette for example). It would be interesting how Floyd can recover with PAC’s fame is now a global sensation (not only the US of A). PAC is therefore a gold mine for Major companies if PAC keeps on winning while Floyd keeps on whining.

  • Ros says:

The thing with Pacquiao, he makes a lot of people happy. Every penny he earned, he shared it to people he loves, people he cares and to people who needs help. He becomes a philantropist because he knows how hardships really means compare to others who easily forget where they roots begin. Since Hatton-Pacquiao fight Mosley is constatly challenging Pacquiao. A lot of people accused him afraid of Mosley. When he fought Mayweather last year 2010, Mosley was 38 years of age and nobody seems to care about his age. Now Pacquiao accepted the fight against Mosley which by the way will still be 38 yrs of age by the time the fight happens, the same majority are accusing him now a cherrypicker for Mosley being too old. Why people easily forget and most of them are so hypocrites, isn´t it?

  • Banana Man says:

  • Lapu Lapu says:

Floydie could not even fill a stadium with his fights. More than 1000 seats vacant from his last fight with Mosley which was dubbed as the Fight of the Year by Golden Boy and a forecast of more than 3 million PPV was thrown out the window at fight night.
