Cotto-Margarito II on July 16th

By Dan Ambrose: The long awaited rematch between Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 KO’s) and Antonio Margarito (38-7, 27 KO’s) will be happening on July 16th, according to Steve Kim at Maxboxing.com. This is provided that Cotto wins his fight next month against Ricardo Mayorga, and that’s a big if, because Cotto is a fighter that can be beaten on any given night if things aren’t working out for him.

The Cotto vs. Margarito II fight will also depend on Margarito’s healing from his facial injuries he sustained in his last fight against Manny Pacquiao last November. Margarito suffered a fractured right orbital bone, among the other facial injuries he suffered.

The fracture required surgery and he’s been healing all these months. He took a lot of head shot in the mostly one-sided fight and he probably would have been wise to have quit around the halfway point in the fight rather than continue to absorb a one-sided pounding from Pacquiao for 12 rounds.

Margarito stopped Cotto three years ago in an 11th round TKO in 2008. Cotto took a real beating in that fight, which left his face looking like a terrible mask of blood when the bout was halted in the 11th. Cotto was cut over both eyes and his nose was fractured.

The thing of it is Cotto really wasn’t hit all that much in the fight until the 10th, when he ran out of gas from his constant movement and was hurt while up against the ropes. Cotto then took a couple of knees to escape punishment in the 11th and the fight was stopped. A lot of boxing fans think that Cotto hasn’t been the same fighter he once was since that fight. But by the same token, Margarito hasn’t looked nearly as good either. He was beaten in his very next fight by Shane Mosley in 2009.

Margarito came back from that loss to beat the unknown Roberto Garcia, a fringe contender, at junior middleweight in May 2010. Margarito looked like a shell of himself in that fight, struggling to beat a guy that he likely would have walked through previous to the Cotto fight. And in his last fight, Margarito was easily beaten by Pacquiao last November. Margarito looked slow and very average in that fight.

Cotto win unanimous decision in a tough fight with many highlights

I expect scores of about 116-112

Margarito cannot knock him out without loaded gloves, so we got the distance!

Margarito cannot beat up Cotto like he did without loaded gloves, so Cotto win a close decision!

    This is simple logic

unless of course Margarito didn’t use loaded gloves…. :O

  • Cyntax says:

Dan, you’re an idiot. To say Cotto can be beaten on any given night shows that you’re not much of a boxing fan. He has two losses. One to the P4P king, Pacquaio and another to a fighter with loaded gloves.

Apparently, you don’t proofread your work before publishing. Very ignorant statement.

    @ joker

Before the pac fight that was Margaritas biggest fight to date he got caught trying to cheat in his very next fight, so by that fight I think margarita cheated, come on man the Mosely fight wasn’t as big as there fight together, no we can’t prove it but neither can u say he didn’t cheat, Margaritos credit is shot, he’ll never admitt it if he did & nobody knows that’s the problem..

  • Harry says:

When the fight happens it will be fight of the year..

  • marcos says:

Can Margarito win without enhancing his chances? It seems since the controversy with Cotto he has not been able to represent that knockout power he was once thought to have. Not being a Cotto fan myself and not respecting Margarito for having cheated in the sport and hence cheating the fans, I do want to see Cotto defeat Margarito fair and square once and for all.

  • Harry says:

One think will happen this time it will be a fair fight and cotto wins,he will want it more.

  • Jm says:

Everyone have something to say listen the guy have two loses how Many manny loses he got?? Come on even that those two loses were went he was having family problems the guy it’s a great champion and he’s done alot for boxing!!

  • carlos says:

Cotto over rated? Give me a break, no American or European not even Latin America media hyped him up or called him a P4P fighter You probably talking of his fan base a good 99% are Puerto Rican and that is where haters come in to the picture! Cotto fought the best that was out there 140 lbs 147- or what he can make money also, make a living its a job for crying out load!!!

  • steroids help says:

Cotto has always had a weak chin… Look at what zab did… Zab rocked him and cotto was done until he punched judah in the balls… He moved up from 140 bc he couldnt handle being hit as much… Cotto was always overrated…he is a good guy though

  • carlos says:

To John, I can see you dont know the differnce, between getting hit from round 1 thru 12 (Paquiao fight)and Margarito started connectng solid about the 8th RD, Please dont compare the swelling, you dont know much of boxing! And be sympathetic it wasnt you or I getting heat, We need to get cheaters out of the boxing game and you are not helping,so shut up! you are not a boxing fan! Just an opinion man.

  • john says:

of course cotto’s face is going to swell,he got hit a lot,,,,so manny had loaded gloves too?? cotto’s face looked worse against manny…u people just don’t accept that cotto can’t take it when guys punch back at him,he starts running around the ring, like he did against margarito, against manny, against clottey and when mosley started to pressure him he ran too…

  • Jm says:

Harry !! You are right on point man!!

  • GKhan says:

I think Cotto will K.O. Margarito this time. Margarito was suspected of hand wrapping that could have caused Cotto’s defeat. I too believe, Cotto was winning before the 10th round. Some fools believe Cotto is no longer the same since he was beaten by Margo and Pacquiao. I think, Cotto has fully recovered, 2 losses didn’t take away anything from him. He ain’t shot as others think. Even Pacquiao lost 3x and became p4p king afterwards. Cotto will K.O. Margarito the next time they meet.

  • Harry says:

If u watched the last fight not a mark on cottos face, then round ten it looked like cottos face just balloned up,like it had been hit with house bricks, the look on cottos face he did nt no what was happen,i hope its pay back time..

  • flip23 says:

Margarito vs cotto, in the first fight I think magarito had loaded gloves which dan didn’t mention after the Mosley fight everyone was knows he was caught with loaded gloves & a lot of people think he used them against cotto..I think with cotto new trainer would beat Margarito.. but dan did mention Margarito hasn’t looked the same, wonder why.. can someone say loaded gloves..

  • tg says:

“The thing of it is Cotto really wasn’t hit all that much in the fight until the 10th”

That’s because they hands wraps started to harden.
oh and Margocheato always been slow and ordinary look at his fights.

  • vince vegas says:

I think you’re selling Cotto a little short, Dan.

  • carlos says:

to rca; Cotto did box the first fight , Margaritos blue print to be beaten was exposed when he fought mosely, fighting in side not going back , cotto is going to destroy him, Stuart is going to tell him stay inside all the time just like mosely, I really see margaritos riht socket damaged again cotto hits harder than paquiao! Cotto was boxing that nite so yes margarito was slightly swollen, but this time around they are not going to take no backward steps, Good Exmple : watch Cotto against mayorga, perfect practice for the margacheato rematch!

  • Herm says:

I definitely cant see Cotto losing to Mayorga.. Cotto is too skilled for him, plus Mayorga is older and slower..

  • Doc says:

I expect Cotto to run through mayorga Now. I know he wants to pay margarito back for those cement fists beat down that pretty much ended his reign as a hot prospect

  • Jm says:

Derp !! Yeah he did had surgery and his ready to put a beat down on mayorga!!

  • Carlos J. Alvarado Jr. says:

Dan Ambrose needs to retire as a writer . Miguel will KO Mayorga & beat Margarito by majority decision .

  • derp says:

I heard somewhere that cotto has come off shoulder surgery which should make his right hands more powerful, can anyone confirm this?

  • Antonio's Musing says:

I told Arum not to announce this as now I think Cotto will loose to Mayorga on purpose so as not to face Margarito.

  • rca says:

Emotions aside, Cotto and Steward have to have a good plan for the fight with Margo or Miguel will lose. He knows (and also Steward ) that Miguel cannot KO Margarito. He has to box him all through the fight since Cotto is faster and is the much better boxer. Cotto will be tagged in the fight and if he loses his temper just as he did when Pac started to tag him in the second round of their fight, Margo will KO him. Remember Margarito is out to prove that he can beat Miguel without the alleged hand wraps and if Margo’s motivation to redeem himself is greater than Cotto’s quest for vengeance and Cotto loses his temper during the fight, Cotto will lose. Miguel has to keep his composure through out the fight and listen to Steward if he is to win this fight.

  • al says:

hopefully this does go ahead and cotto dishes out some rough justice.personally i hope cotto really puts an end to margaritos carear.i actually met cotto in kondin last october and he is a genuinely nice dude and would never sink as low as margarito did and cheat in a fight even if he was only caught out against shane mosley and not in the cotto fight.come on miguel give the world what they wanna see.

  • BLUE DOG says:

    I HOPE COTTO KO MARGO

  • G.I. says:

    Come on Dan…
Margerito did not easily loose to Pacquiao, Pac-man was getting pounded a lot more than his last opponents, convincing me that he’s really on something! Marg. did go all out… but i just can’t give him his respect because of the hand wraps that you and many others completely ignore and pretend to forget to mention. I understand though, it’s entertainment right? Forget about who does what and who takes what substance!!! Let’s just see who wins even if it was done in a dirty fashion!!! War is war and money is money… What has boxing become?!

All Mayweather’s asking for is a blood test!!! Steroid testing should become manditory and also checking gloves. From my understanding, Marg. had dried blood on his handwraps on the night that Mosely made a fool of him. Mosely did do better than Pac-man did to Marg. Now look back at the Cotto and Mosely fight… Two true to the heart “warriors!” Very similar styles. That was Cotto before he got jerked “twice!’

The point is, there still are a lot of Cotto haters out there that ignore the facts!!! A fact is a fact. Of course Cotto will rock Marg. without plaster and of course Cotto will rock Pac-man without steroids! There’s only one way to find out and the boxing commitee needs to give Puerto Rican fans what they really want and stop hating on the flags that they wave around! Cotto stays shut and just waits for the truth to be revieled in one way, that’s in the ring. It will only make him seem great and that”s exactly what anti-Puerto Ricans don”t want!

By the way, another thing you left out; Cotto has Emanuel!

  • Truly says:

“Cotto is a fighter that can be beaten on any given night if things aren’t working out for him”

He was beaten by Margarito after running out of steam having won the first ten rounds of the fight. And his only other loss was to the best fighter on the planet. How does that make him a fighter who can be beaten at anytime when things aren’t working out for him?
Things have only ever not worked out for him twice in 37 fights, i’d say hes doing pretty well with a record like that.

  • phil says:

COMME ON COTTO GET YOUR REVENGE AND SPANK THIS CHEETING MEX ALL NIGHT LONG!!! AND RETIRE HIM IN A BRUTAL STOPPAGE!!
