Sauerland wants a Super Six-like cruiserweight tournament

By Eric Thomas: Dan Rafael is reporting that Kalle Sauerland, of Sauerland Events, is hoping to out together a cruiserweight tournament along the same lines as the Super Six tournament to get attention to their cruiserweights that they have in their stable. It’s obviously a good idea for Sauerland, because they have two of the best cruiserweights in the world with Marco Huck and Steve Cunningham, both of which currently hold titles in the cruserweight division.

If the cruiserweight tournament is put together and Hulk and Cunningham emerge as big stars, it would be a huge payoff for Sauerland. As it is, Cunningham and Huck aren’t hugely popular fighters, at least not in the U.S. That could change if Kalle is able to put together a similar tournament as the Super Six tourney, which has been an overwhelming success with boxing fans from all around the world, especially in Britain, Germany and the U.S.

The one problem that could hinder the success of a cruiserweight tourney is that the cruiserweight division doesn’t have a lot of talented fighters. There’s only a handful of them and no real stars. Cunningham, Huck and Krzystof Wlodarczyk are good fighters but they are not huge stars. And the tourney would need more than just those three for it to catch on.

You would think that it would need at least six fighters to make it interesting, which would mean that Sauerland would need to recruit fighters like Danny Green, Ola Afolabi and possibly Denis Lebedev or Victor Ramirez if they were to make this work. That might be asking a lot and if they pick weaker fighters, it might be as interesting.

There’s fighters like BJ Fores, Alexander Frenkel, Yoan Pablo Hernadez and Alexander Alexeev who would also be excellent picks for the tournament. Unfortunately, Germany has done a good job of recruiting the best cruiserweights from around the world.

It might be as interesting of four or five of the six cruiserweights are from Germany, though. But it also might be appealing if some lesser fighters are picked from the top 15 to represent the other countries. Who wants to watch their fighter can beaten up by the German based cruiserweights, which are clearly the best in the world right now.

Cunningham is from the United States, and previously defeated Huck years ago. But Huck has gotten a lot better since then and it’s doubtful that Cunningham would be able to repeat his past success against Huck at this point in his career.
