Pacquiao-Clottey nearly a sellout, could sell 45,000 tickets – News

By Eric Thomas: The Dallas Cowboy stadium will likely be filled with at least 45,000 fans for the March 13th fight between World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao vs. Joshua Clottey. According to ESPN, the fight is nearing a sellout of 45,000. If it reaches that total, the stadium, which can hold 100,000 fans, will be reconfigured from 45,000 to a larger number to accommodate additional fans that might want to travel to Arlington, Texas to see the fight.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum says “Right now we’re on target to sell the 45,000 seats and we’ll be happy when we do that. We sold 35 tickets [on Wednesday] and are on target of doing that today.” Its unclear how many tickets have been sold at this time. Arum isn’t saying but he feels good about it reaching the 45,000 number by fight time on March 13th.That number is pretty phenomenal for a fight that appears to be a mismatch on paper.

Clottey, a fighter who doesn’t typically throw a lot of punches and who is coming off a loss in his last fight against Miguel Cotto, isn’t well known to casual boxing fans. He also has few wins over top tier fighters during his career. Clottey has lost to two out of the four good top fighters that he’s faced during his career.

Despite Clottey’s poor performance against top caliber opposition, the WBO has him ranked as the number #1 contender. This really speaks to the lack of quality talent in the welterweight division as a while right now at this time. There are just not too many good fighters in the division other than Floyd Mayweather Jr., Shane Mosley, Pacquiao and to a lesser extent Andre Berto and Clottey.

The Pacquiao-Clottey fight could end up doing really well on Pay-Per-View as well, even if only Pacquiao’s diehard fans are the only ones that purchase tickets for the fight. Pacquiao has a lot of fans who don’t care who he fights and will gladly pay $49.95 to watch him fight. My guess is the fight will do at least a million buys from Pacquiao’s fans alone. Any extra casual fans who just want to see a good fight will tip this number higher by at least 200,000 to 400,000 more I’m betting.

  • Doctor Who says:

This will be one of Pac’s last few fights. This is a boxing fan’s never miss classic event. A truly bloody match.

  • RED FF35 says:

    @PAC-I-JUICER

That’s only valid if all people want to watch boxing regardless of who’s fighting but ain’t got cash. What if people want to watch Floyd to see him kiss the canvas? What if people want to watch Manny to feel the excitement he’s showing in the ring?

  • cody says:

    jinky,

in britain you have real passion for there stars, and can easily get sell out crowds, not like the yanky fans,
has said before if the big fight does happen take it to wembley 100,000 fans easy filled and biased mexican and us judges kept away

  • puggy says:

Can’t be bothered to check the details, but I’m sure I read an article here saying that the fight would be lucky to make 15k sales. hmmm… It’s not a question of if Mayweather / Mosley will outsell Pacquaio / Clottey but of by how much will it outsell by. 2 huge names in boxing, in their home country plus an HBO 24/7 promo. Any predictions? I say the difference will be about 200k buys. The numbers should play a factor in negotiations for the Mayweather / Pacquaio bout.

  • lacem up says:

    aussie boy
dont get your undies in a bunch….just watch your little mismatch and enjoy it !! hopefully the winner of it will step up to the plate !!

  • caveman says:

What is A-side meth means? What about 500 years ago that the American soldiers fought Filipinos? America is only about 200 years old. Are these people on crack? Rodkill, you’re an idiot like your idol.

  • Hector says:

    Well said AussieBoxFan. Agreed!

  • aussieboxfan says:

lacem up; “Real fans” watch every seccond of boxing they can. Be it amatures, tactitians, brawlers or spoilers. There is always something new to learn about “the sweet science” from EVERY boxing match.
Pacquiao v Clottey is a classic offence v defence match with a twist.. The defensive fighter being the much stronger and bigger man. This is a very rare occurrence in the sport you claim to be a “real fan” of…Boxing.
Depriving yourself of such an event just because you didn’t get the fight you want, is a little sad and a shame for a “real fan”.

  • Bob says:

Yea Polly M, but eventually he will become broke and beg on the street’s of Vegas

  • jinky says:

i thought manny was ment to be the most popular fighter in years lol joe calzaghe and ricky hatton can sell 100,000 tickets in britain on there own

  • lacem up says:

  • Bloopers 101 says:

  • Ed says:

All the way from Canada just to see the fight of one of The Best- Manny.
And for other PPV will be very busy here. Manny is our fighter. Go Manny Go…..

  • 15 Rounds says:

HELL YEAH ROAD TO DALLAS I GOT MY TICKET

  • Simon says:

There will always be doubters and pessimist as to how this fight will perform in terms of buys. Now close to 45,000 doubles the audience if the fight was say held in Vegas. Not bad for a non-north american fighters.

  • jay says:

team mayweather what the????……… dont worry boss, you can do better, your the greatest …..
    ha
h.b.o management. I dont believe that……. its just a tune up consolation fight.

  • roys says:

have you ever seen 45,000 people live ? seen 35,000 and that was endless, filled up the area for blocks and blocks packed, lot of people x lot of money, who need ppv? that iceing on the cake.

  • rat-a-too says:

not bad for a tune up fight ,pac made a cross over fan base,he relate-able ,and the new buying fans are paying the cash at the door .bet ppv are going to make a million too,

  • PAC-I-JUICER says:

Economics-101. More ‘cheap’ tickets has to be sold to equal the average price of 1 ticket at the MGM Grand. Lets throw a few numbers around. Lets say you purchase 5 tickets for the price of $64.00 thats $320.00 right. But the price of 1 ticket to the Floyd MGM Grand fight “cheap” average $470.00, most expensive $14K. So although the Pac fight sell out at 45K tickets sold, the price is cheap, so the total sellout still doesn’t equate to a Floyd MGM Grand sellout fight. Men lie(Arum), women lie, numbers don’t lie. If it don’t make dollars, it don’t make cents(SENSE).

  • jiminsconsin says:

Arum sucks. He’s a greedy mother who’s been bad for boxing. That said, it’s smart of him to put this fight in this stadium and it’s good for the fans.

  • dagohoy says:

pacman mom say’s -pacquiao son u have 2 quit figthing in d ring, dis big guy fron ghana will hit u one big big upper cut on your chin, “game is over”-.,pacman say’s dont worry mom dis is my last fight….

  • wowzabean says:

    Duke,

Very true. Then again a lot of these knuckle head posters are a minority. Majority of sports fans like Pacquiao.

  • ElCondor says:

That’s right, 50,000+ fans will come to Dallas to watch two foreign-born fighters collide. Who ever said importing foreign athletes to liven up sports was bad? Last time I checked, they’ve already been doing it in baseball, what with all those recruitment forays into the Dominican Republic. So, why not high caliber foreign fighters to make boxing in the US more exciting?! Alright, I’ll concede the Heavyweight division to Americans, why not, ‘cuz us Filipinos are just little fellas who pack a punch in the lighter divisions.

But it’s funny – when folks think “boxing” these days, they think in terms of the lighter divisions where there’s more action and excitement…thanks to foreign fighters. Okay, Floyd’s good, Mosley’s still good, but…they don’t generate a lot of excitement. Besides, L’il Floyd is so picky and unpredictable, and perhaps next time – he’ll demand his opponent get a colonoscopy (ouch!). Whether we’re rooting for PacMan or Clottey, let’s just take the Road to Dallas. And let’s have lots of fun!

  • Duke says:

by reading most of the articles of this website, you would think nobody would watch this fight. over 40,000 for a fight in america between two foreigners. like don king, ONLY IN AMERICA!

  • roys says:

    think of boxing as candy.
too much of it,its loses it luster, enjoy every fight to live in the moment,if pac and floyd fight, the p4p is decided its over, what then? think about that. arum said boxing has returned, would they want to kill boxing again with out playing for time and building the interest? pac and floyd will fight win or lose for the p4p title at sometime.enjoy every fight as its a fighter work win or lose its business.

  • kiribati says:

Even if ticket prices were slashed 50% and half of the tickets were given for free, Mayweather-Marquez fight weren’t able to fill MGM arena seats numbering 17K. Floyd and Golden Boy must be feeling scary nervous right now not being able to sell Floyd’s fight.

  • Phillip Tattaglia says:

Fck all haters, this event will do well, you got the whites for duddley, undefeated mind you, the mexicanos for castillos, soto, diaz, the africans and west indians for clottey and everyone else wanting to see pacman…it will do well, pacman is no longer just a southeast asian phenomenon, the colored folks in the intelligentsia has yet to accept that

  • x-man says:

floyd has got to do big time advisement as most of his fans are no longer boxing buyers, what I notice from talking to friends and work is floyd has a older crowd of people that know him.and floyd has to find them get them interested again to pay the ppv.

  • x-man says:

heat on floyd ,he got the hbo,he got the better fight a contender fight,so he had better do 50 % better that pac or his butt is grass.and pac just cleaning house,he said he fight mosley next, it be this year as pac fight twice a year, just to keep his fans entertain so we should see about 8+ rounds as that the money worth.

  • rat-a-too says:

and these are 90 dollar seats, heard the lower one are taken and its go up to thousand+ per seats, wounder if floyd going to 15 dollar theater seats again like last time and called them ppv sales.15 dollar in a theater is a steal

  • roys says:

“We sold 350 tickets [Wednesday] and are on target of doing that [again] today.”
ha.ha tell the truth, allways down playing pac.

  • z says:

No way this fight does 1.2-1.4 mil. Cotto/pac did 1.25 there is no way this fight gets that number as clottey is a lot less known then cotto.

  • rocks says:

NBA All Stars game audience was 108,713. Pacquiao-Clottey the event may reach 90-100K. A lot of Texans and Mexicans will fill up the Cowboys stadium to be part of the boxing history. They’re very lucky as they can see Pacquiao and Clottey fighting like two giants right before their eyes. That will be an amazing experience. If only I live anywhere in Texas, I’ll watch it live there at Dallas.

  • Bob says:

I agree Vic before he fought Delahoya he was scrawny than he packed on some muscle for that fight. His head got bigger his wife left him cause his pecker shrunk so his ex had to find a real brother.

  • Vic says:

Mayweather is also on steroid. i have a proof. his head is way bigger now. mayweather is a big time cheater!

  • gladnotmad says:

Pac has exciting fights, PBF has technically sound fights.

Pac gets my PPV, but PBFvsMosley is obviously a big fight!

  • Philip Green says:

‘There are just not too many good fighters in the division other than Floyd Mayweather Jr., Shane Mosley, Pacquiao and to a lesser extent Andre Berto and Clottey.’…….hmmmm

  • Polly M. says:

Of course Mayweather Jr. can draw millions of buys WHY? Not only he talks too much, he also joins circus acts like WWE and Mayweather Family circus, he also gives $1 dollar bills in a party, club or wherever he goes. How pathetic is that?

  • crottyruh says:

This is really very simple, you don’t like Pac? don’t watch him. I’m sure all Floyd fan will do this, that’s ok, and even without HBO 24/7, that’s still ok. This is really very interesting, not only I’m excited about the possibility that Pac might be the first to KO Clottey, I’m also excited to know about their viewership. Only a couple of weeks to go !!

  • Pac says:

everyone is talkin’ sh*t.. You guys don’t know anything.. The reason why the PacvsMayweather didn’t happen is they want to make it bigger and get more people involve.. This fight will happen.. It’s HYPE!!

  • Boxingfan3 says:

    @ Jackson

uh duh mayweather can bring just as much as PAC are u dumb because mayweather has the same fan base as PAC and he hasn’t been accused of cheating

  • Mr Rich says:

It just goes to show that a fool and his money are easily parted.

  • Sophocles says:

Amazing that a foreign fighter is doing these type of blockbuster numbers on US SOIL, no American fighter can pull 50,000 people to see a fight live at Texas. EASILY, the biggest draw in fight sports.

  • sure says:

WWE sell out faster tickets than pac and clottey fight this is a joke fight
i think i will watch fake fight WWE

  • bystander says:

hey roadkill, it seems you know what you’re talking about. pls. introduce those to pacman coz he does not know and has no idea of what you’re saying. you are a druggist and need to go to rehab. ifeel sorry for you and your family if you have one.

  • donnie isaac says:

Pacman is the best, fans will watch him whoever is his opponent.

  • ozzy osborne says:

leave your car running in the parking lot 4 this fight !!

  • Floyd says:

    @roadkill

Uncle Roger, is that you? Make sure you save some of that good stuff for my crackhead Dad.

  • jigs says:

pacman is phenomenal….a true warrior, exciting fighter. thats whwt he is…. go pacman

  • Paul Mason says:
