sartisov3454By Erik Schmidt: Number #4 ranked WBA super middleweight contender Dimitri Sartison (24-1, 15 KOs) defeated Russian journeyman Vasily Andriyanov (7-18, 1 KOs) by an easy eight-round unanimous decision on Saturday night at the Bordelandhalle, Magdeburg, in Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany. The final judges’ scores were 79-73, 80-72 and 80-72. Sartison, 28, originally from Rudny, Kazakstan and now living in Hamburg, Germany, dominated virtually every minute of the eight round bout and had little trouble beating Andriyanov.

Along the way, Sartison showed a wide variety of punches and punching angles on offense, making him hard to predict what he would do next. However, his stamina issues, which was a problem for him in his 12th round TKO loss to Mikkel Kessler in June 2008, resurfaced somewhat as Sartison looked greatly fatigued already by the 6th round.

However, the offensively limited Andriyanov, 33, wasn’t about to be able to do anything to capitalize on the situation because of his low punch output.

Sartison jabbed frequently in the 1st round, circling constantly to his left. A minute into the round, Sartison began opening up with combinations, landing left uppercuts and right hands to the head of Andriyanov.

There was no return fire from Andriyanov, who looked as if he was studying Sartison and searching for an opening to throw his punches. Unfortunately, he would continue to wait like this for the remainder of the bout, only rarely opening up with any kind of offensive attack.

In the 2nd round, Sartison began throwing more combinations, shooting right hooks, left hands and turning southpaw at times to throw right hands. It was all very unpredictable, as he would constantly change his punch variety to keep Andriyanov constantly guessing what he’d do next.

Sartison began using a lot of fakes late in the round, trying to get Andriyanov out of position so that he could land something big. For the most part, Sartison was content to jab away at Andriyanov and easily win the round.

In the 3rd round, Sartison was conducting a jab clinic, repeatedly pounding Andriyanov in the face with a steady flow of jabs interrupted only by and uppercut and right hand from Sartison. Andriyanov finally got his offense started to a small degree, landing some body shots with both hands and avoiding trying to land head shots. This was perhaps because of the constant movement from Sartison which made it difficult to land to his head.

In rounds four and five, Sartison continued throwing nice combinations and a ton of jabs and getting little thrown back at him in response. By the end of the 5th, however, Sartison’s face was beginning to redden, not from the punches from Andriyanov, but rather because Sartison was already breathing hard and looking slightly out of breath from the previous rounds.

It wasn’t a good sign, considering that Andriyanov was hardly pressing him and the bout was pretty much a glorified sparring session. Nevertheless, he was tired and his punches were becoming weaker. Sartison continued changing to southpaw every once in awhile, landing right hands when he would do so.

In rounds six and seven, Sartison jabbed Andriyanov continuously, still circling to the left and staying on the move to prevent the Russian from landing any shots. Sartison landed some nice left hands in the 7th round, landing flush with hooks to the head.

Sartison sometimes loaded up with his shots in the round, changing the power the on his punches, and trying to land sneaky right hands. Andriyanov, however, showed a good chin and took the punches without any problems whatsoever.

In the 8th round, Andriyanov now badly behind in the fight and in need of a knockout to win, pressured Sartisov continuously throughout the round, stalking him but finding few opportunities to land due to Sartisov’s constant movement. Sartison continued jabbing, mixing up his punches and landing shots from a wide variety of angles.

At the end of the fight, Sartison had swelling under his left eye from some of the rare right hands that Andriyanov landed in the fight, but other than that, Sartison was unmarked.

It was a good win for Sartison, all in all, but he needs to continue working on his stamina issues because this is the same problem that occurred in his loss to Kessler. In that fight, Sartison tired out around the 6th round and was absorbing a lot of punishment in the 2nd half of the fight from Kessler.
