By Manuel Perez: Undefeated light middleweight contender Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (38-0, 29 KOs) will face unbeaten Argentinean Luciano Leonel Cuello (23-0, 10 KOs) on March 28th in Tijuana, Baja California, for the vacant WBO Latino light middleweight title. Chavez, 23, is making a slightly bigger step up from some of the softer opponents that he’s been facing thus far in his six year pro career. Without the luxury of any kind of amateur career to speak of, Chavez Jr. is taking the slow approach to his pro career building up slowly against better fighters in small increments rather than leaps and bounds.

By Dave Lahr: I’m still trying to figure out what either Miguel Cotto and Kelly Pavlik accomplished this past weekend in beating the poor opposition that they were put in with. 10 years ago, names like Marco Antonio Rubio and Michael Jennings would have never been in the position to challenge for a title against quality fighters like Pavlik and Cotto, yet this weekend we had to suffer through both of these bouts which ended in one-sided knockouts.

Jennings tried the best he could but he had no weapons to use against the powerful shots from Cotto. Whereas Cotto was laying waste to Jennings with sledgehammer left hooks, Jennings was only able to fire back with pesky jabs. As you can guess, Jennings stood no chance in the fight and was beaten down in five lop-sided rounds.

by William Mackay: Former welterweight champion Miguel Cotto (33-1, 27 KOs) recaptured a title on Saturday night in defeating Michael Jennings (34-2, 16 KOs) by a 5th round TKO to capture the vacant WBO welterweight title at New York’s Madison Square Garden. Jennings, fighting for his first time out of the UK, was much weaker than Cotto and did little other than jab and move for much of the fight. His jabs had little effect on Cotto, who took them and kept on applying pressure.

Maybe it would have been a good fight if Miguel Cotto (33-1, 27 KOs) was fighting with a handicap, let’s say with injury or two slowing him down, but that would have been the only way this would have been a competitive fight.

By Manuel Perez: Miguel Cotto (33-1, 27 KOs) stopped a badly overmatched Michael Jennings (34-2, 16 KOs) late in the 5th on Saturday night to capture the vacant World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title at the Madison Square Garden, in New York, New York. Cotto, 28, knocked Jennings down three times in the fight, twice in the 4th, and once late in the 5th.
Cotto Looking Weight Drained For Jennings Fight
By Nate Anderson: According to Steve Bunce from his Boxing Hour show, Miguel Cotto is looking weight drained for his fight tomorrow night with Michael Jennings. The fact that Cotto is weight drained seems to suggest that he’s had to struggle a little more than usual in making the 147 pound welterweight weight limit. That’s not a good sign for Cotto, because if he took too much weight off during his draining and his dehydrating to make weight, this could effect him in the fight with Jennings.

The fight will take place at Madison Square Garden in New York, and there had been talk of the fight not being shown by Setanta due to difficulties working out a deal with the Sports Network.
