Mayweather is too small to fight Golovkin, says Kevin Kelly

1-golovkin3 (14)By Dan Ambrose: Former WBC featherweight champion Kevin Kelly is one of the people who don’t want to see superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) face WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) in a battle of the unbeaten at 154. Golovkin said last Saturday night after his 6th round knockout victory over Willie Monroe Jr. (19-2, 6 KOs) that he’d be willing to come down to junior middleweight to fight Mayweather at 154. You have to remember that Mayweather fought Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, who is even heavier than Golovkin. A lot of boxing fans aren’t aware that Canelo is the same size as Golovkin. It stands to reason if Mayweather was big enough to fight Canelo, then he should be big enough to fight Golovkin, unless the fans believe that Golovkin is better than Canelo. That’s the only reason to argue against Mayweather fighting Golovkin, because the Kazakhstan fighter is the same size as Canelo.

Golovkin challenged Mayweather to show him the contract and he’d immediately sign it to make the fight a done deal. However, Kelly doesn’t think it’s a good fight for Mayweather because Golovkin rehydrates to 170+ for his fights at middleweight, and he thinks he would be simply too big for Mayweather.

Kelly thinks that if Mayweather fought Golovkin, they would then look for someone even bigger for Mayweather to fight like IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko.

“People hate Floyd so much that they can’t wait to get him beat,” Kelly said to Fighthype. “It’s ridiculous. For what? What’s next? Klitschko? Golovkin is way too big for Floyd. He’s 5’10”, he fights at 160. He comes down from probably 170. He’s way too big. If he knocks Floyd out are you going to be happy? You can’t satisfy everybody. Just satisfy yourself,” Kelly said.

I don’t think people would look to have Mayweather fight bigger people than Golovkin if he were to beat the Kazakhstan star. But I do think that fans would push Mayweather to fight other middleweights like Miguel Cotto, Peter Quillin, Andy Lee and Daniel Jacobs. Most of the pressure would be on Mayweather to fight Cotto again because he already beat him in 2012 in a fight at junior middleweight.

“I think Mayweather is the one that would give him [Golovkin] a test, and maybe beat him by a decision,” Garcia said via esnewsreporting.com. “Maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t know.”

I think Kelly is assuming too much about people’s motives for wanting Mayweather to fight Golovkin. They see a guy in Golovkin who is roughly the same weight as Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, a fighter who Mayweather easily beat in 2013. Canelo is actually bigger than Golovkin with the way he rehydrates to the mid-170s compared to Golovkin coming in right at 170. People see that Mayweather fought a bigger Canelo and they want to see him fight Golovkin, who doesn’t weigh as much as Canelo. The only difference is Golovkin doesn’t dehydrate himself to 154 and 155 to fight smaller guys in the junior middleweight division like Canelo does. Golovkin isn’t looking for a weight edge like Canelo does by him fighting smaller guys by dehydrating down to a weight division that doesn’t fit his actual body size.
