Clottey expects Pacquiao to throw a lot of punches on Saturday

By Chris Williams: Joshua Clottey (35-3, 20 KO’s) is counting on Manny Pacquiao to be throwing a lot of punches when he fights him on Saturday night at the Dallas Cowboy Stadium. Clottey is ready for anything that Pacquiao will be bringing to the ring, and he won’t be catching Clottey off guard if he tries to obliterate him with a massive amount of punches in the early rounds of the fight. In an article at the Press Enterprise, Clottey said “He [Pacquiao] throws a lot of punches to people when he sees an opening. He won’t see the openings with me.”

With his crab-like guard and his ability to block almost every punch thrown his way, Clottey is going to make it nearly impossible for Pacquiao to land any clean blows on Saturday night. Pacquiao could still pile up the points, because judges tend to score rounds based on whoever is throwing the most punches and don’t seem to be very good actually noting whether the punches are actually landing or not.

Pacquiao tends to throw a lot of punches anyway, and misses many of them. Clottey will have to make sure he’s busy enough to win rounds because if he throws in the low 20s, he’s not going to win enough rounds to beat Pacquiao. Freddie Roach, Pacquiao’s trainer, believes that he’s going to be able to stop Clottey by flooding him with punches in massive numbers.

That’s possible, but not probable given Clottey’s history of being able to pick up punches and throw back with big power. Pacquiao could leave an opening for Clottey if he tries to throw too many punches. What some people seem to forget is that Clottey is an excellent counter puncher. He’s not in the class of Juan Manuel Marquez with his counter punching ability, but he definitely skilled at responding as soon as he gets hit with power shots.

Pacquiao has done well in his fights against Cotto and Oscar De La Hoya where Pacquiao was able to machine gun both of them down with a high punch volume. Both De La Hoya and Cotto were too slow, and not skilled enough to block the shots coming in. As good as those two fighters were coming into the fight, they weren’t noted for their ability to block shots like Clottey.

Cotto looked helpless against Pacquiao’s punches and blocked very few of them. De La Hoya seemed to cringe and cower against the ropes as Pacquiao rifled him with shots from every angle. Clottey is certainly better than those two in blocking punches. He’s also a lot more rugged as well. De La Hoya was very weak from draining down to 147 for the fight, and Cotto looked shell shocked from his fights with Antonio Margarito and Clottey, both involving Cotto taking a lot of punishment.

Clottey could surprise a lot of people by being able to stand up to Pacquiao’s punch barrages and then answer back with power shots of his own. If Clottey can stick around until the 9th round or more, you can expect him to have given Pacquiao a tremendous amount of punishment, much more perhaps than Pacquiao has ever taken before in his career. I don’t know if Clottey can win this fight, because I can’t see the judges giving him a decision unless he knocks Pacquiao down multiple times, but I think he will hurt Pacquiao and beat him badly.

Clottey ha to KO Pacquiao to win. If it goes to the cards, then he loses!

  • Ray says:

First of all, Manny refused to fight mosely. In fact , Freddie roach said Manny will not fight Mosely. If they did, it would have to be at a catch weight for Mosely which gives Manny the advantage.Mosely has been pursuing Manny but Freddie won’t do it. WHY? afraid Mosely is too strong. I thought he was the best. Freddie always wants an edge for his fighter. If he is going to fight welterwieght then fight welterwieghts without this catch weight crap ! ! Clottey is tailor made for Pac . TAKE THE TEST MANNY !!!!!!

  • berto durant says:

pac will won the battle by knock out in round 2 just like your hero hatton

  • vince vegas says:

Clottey expects Pac to throw a lot of punches? Wow, where did he ever come up with a prediction like that?

I’m not counting Clottey out, having a great defence is… great, but you gotta try to hit back sometime. But his performances lack a certain, I don’t know what to call it, attitude?

I agree with Jorge, Clottey should step in the ring looking to kill or be killed, he’s got nothing to lose.

    Simon,

Why did Pacquiao refuse to take a simple blood test with Mayweather. What is he hiding? Is it PEDs?

    Pacquiao’s behaviour is disgraceful.

  • Hontiveros Dacs says:

Pacquiao will win…Clottey cannot take pacquiao’s flurry of punches’ u’ll see at fight night….GO PACMANIA

  • MarathonMan1 says:

Clottey is going to give Manny a beating. He beats up everyone he fights. He only loses on the cards do to inactivity. He knows he has to knock out Manny. Texas judges, Manny mania? He’s in a perfect position to shock the World. I have to root for Clottey. Manny is one of my favorites too but his die hard 3rd world fans have been getting the helium head. This is going to be a great fight.

    @ Graham

You said it right, “suspected” PEDS user so why not shut your mouth if you have no proof or can’t prove anything.

  • DJDonL says:

Well put… Im not bias to Pac one bit. His greatness is definitly in plain veiw (provided the steriod stories are not true) its just that in this fight I give Clottey a much better chance than much of mainstream media is giving him. Im giving him his fair share of credit.

  • Big Lo says:

    @preston,
    good comment.

    @solini,
Clottey always throws pinpoint punches, but that’s not going to be enough. He will need to throw more punches than usual and maintain a relatively high work rate. Also, the only problem with focusing on the body is that you leave your head open (and that could be dangerous against a fighter like Pac), but he will definitely mix it up (also, left body hooks against southpaws are VERY effective because very often they wrap around to the kidney and are considered legal).

    @Jorge,
I’m sure that’s what Roach is banking his KO prediction on. He is sure that when Clottey covers up (and he will often) that Pac will be able to break his body down – but this could be fool’s gold with Clottey’s vicious uppercuts.

Thank you mister writer i was so close to rip my ppv tickets to pieces.

    Diesel,

This fight doesnt need the hype, put Pacquiao’s name on it and people will know from day 1 it will be an exciting fight.

On the otherhand, put Mayweather’s name on it and people will question if it’ll be worth the money spent to watch a boring fight. Techincal yes, but where’s the entertainment/excitement?

  • diesel says:

HAHAAHA. . . cant believe this fight is trying to get hype, this fight is a joke and everyone knows that PAC is going to win. I wont even entertain the idea of ordering this fight, it is a sure win for PAC. CLOTTEY is just there to make PAC look good, CLOTTEY is custom made for PAC and PAc will destroy the C fighter. At least MONEY is fighting MOSLEY, oh and he is doing it without a catchweight. CLottey is so not a threat that team PAC doesnt even need a catchweight for him, but they needed one for COTTO. HMMMM very interesting, if CLottey was a danger they would at least make him come down in weight.

  • Too_Many_Idiots says:

    Preston,
Pacquiao didnt refuse Mosely, Roach did, simply due to the fact that his masterpiece wasnt ready.

    Graham,
I pity you the day you face a court that judges you of doing wrong without giving any evidence.

  • Bra Emma (Dallas) says:

This will be a very good fight. Clottey has been underrated for a while now, this is the time to prove to the world. THIS IS HIS CHANCE

  • preston says:

Lapu- now why do you want to start that crap on this blog…….Mayweather is also fighting the dude that Pac flat out refused to fight without leaving any room for doubt, so what does that say about Pac?……would you consider him to be a ducker, or a chicken?????

  • graham says:

    Clottey,

Lose the black trunks, wear red preferably bright red with “BLOOD SAMPLE” written on them, may be then you will have a fair chance against this guy.

  • Solini says:

For those that say Clottey should go out there throwing a bunch of punches are misguided. He doesn’t have to throw many punches, he needs pin point accurate punches that will count when they land. Pacquaio’s former corner man will be Clottey’s head trainer going into this fight, Clottey should throw bombs to the smaller guys body. DLH, Hatton, Cotto all tried to knock his head off, kill the body the head will fall. Everyone knows to slow the faster guy you have to go to the body, Clottey is a very good body puncher this should be his focus.

  • floyd ch says:

your thinking too much of clottey, he is p and so is pacquiao. hopefully someone from the crowd goes into the ring and bangs em both out

  • Fighter says:

No sh/t! I thought this was a dance off. this guy Clottey is not too sharp huh?

  • Jorge says:

Clottey needs to go out there and throw punches, and see if he can knock Pacquiao. Go for the knock out or get knocked out thats how Clottey go into this fight against Pacquiao. No Respect, He is the bigger guy and the stronger guy, so he does have a chance. If he goes into a defense shell, which everyone expects him to do including Pacquiao’s camp, Clottey will get knocked out. Im curious to see if Manny Pacquiao will throw any body punches to Clottey when he has him cornered. Look at Pacquiao’s fights he really doesnt focus on going to the body even when he has his fighters hurt.

Hopefully its not a one sided fight.

  • graham says:

    Clottey,

You’ll be getting into the ring with a suspected PEDs user, what else can you expect?
