Pacquiao-Cotto Prediction – Boxing

pac453445By Glen Anglin: I think the Pac Man has finally bitten off more than he can chew in the handsome Puerto Rican star. Cotto is the bigger man and bangs very well with both hands, especially the hook. I do not believe that he is shot simply because he was busted up in the Margarito assault. (By the way, Margarito should be given a lifetime ban). He showed resilience and toughness in the Clottey fight even though he was badly cut. I believe that his size, strength and power will overcome Pacquiao’s speed and spirit. He may not out-punch Pacquiao, but he will out-hurt him.

As someone with enormous respect for the Filipino hero, I have watched him closely for his recent fights. He has continually pushed his performance envelope for the last 5 years, taking on bigger and tougher challenges each successive fight. In doing so, he grew his body past its optimum size and weight class. I think his best weight would be 135. At that weight at this stage of his career, I would pick him over any lightweight ever.

In Cotto, he is facing an excellent, full sized welterweight in his prime who possesses bravery, skill and heavy hands. He is a tougher challenge than either De la Hoya or Hatton were at the stage of their careers that they fought Pacquiao. True, Cotto will dry out to 145, but I don’t think that two pounds of liquid will have a negative impact on Cotto’s readiness on fight night. If Cotto is not weakened by making weight, then he will be able to walk through Pacquiao’s power shots, and then close the distance in the later rounds to do real damage. Remember that Pacquiao hit a skeletal DLH with a trainload of clean punches, but never had him close to going down.

Of course, he did batter and put to sleep Hatton; however, Hatton was not as naturally big or young as is Cotto. In addition, Cotto will not run in with his chin out, as did Hatton.

I believe that Cotto will be able to succeed against Pacquiao as well as did Juan Manuel Marquez, but with the harder punches and chin of a real welterweight. My guess is that Cotto will floor Pacquiao at least once, but that the fight will go to decision with Cotto the victor. JGA

    You are dead wrong %#@hole!

  • rye says:

I guess the predictions were wrong…go PACMAN!!

  • arvin says:

i am rooting for pacman. both fighters are fighting for national pride; both have strong chin, i really don’t see anyone being knocked out. historically, both fighters are tough to be knocked out. they both have the heart of a champion!
i do see cotto being cut in the latter rounds and pacquiao to win by decision because of his hand speed and number of hits. the judges may decide in favor of cotto if they perceive cotto to deliver the harder punches. however, that will be hard because they will think that pacman punches hard as well.. its an impression they cannot deny because of the cuts cotto will sustain

  • mark says:

I believe this will be a great fight but at the end I believe Cotto will win, dont take anything away from pac man he is one of the best boxers of all time, but lets not forget Cotto is also a very good fighter, back then mayweather was not even thinking about pac man when he retiered, Cotto was his only challenger at the time that was his real reason. People say speed ok so how about when cotto beat mosley, he is very fast and stronger than pac man and what happened. Look is cotto should gain his confidence back its going to be the same fight as marquez vs mayweather. But then again with so much money a pac man mayweather one never knows.

  • macky says:

it’s a great fight i’m sure both are great figthers. figths like this brings excitement and thrill to boxing.

  • danny says:

post-cotto, pacman will bit more than he can chew again. haha, that’s for sure.

he is the pacman, ain’t he?

  • Glen Anglin says:

There are no excuses; if Pacquiao wins, he wins.

I used skeletal as an adjactive to describe how skinny ODLH looked in his fight against Pacquiao.

Let me say again: Pacquiao’s place in history, win or lose, is secure. He is a GREAT fighter and has an amazing record against top competition from 112 pounds to 140 pounds. However, I just dont think that he will beat Cotto. Even the greatest fighters lost sometimes.

Some of you guys make it seem like PacMan has the greatest defense in the world. He has been hurt by slow as fighter like Moralas and Marquez. And your telling me that if Cotto hits him like Marquez did he wont go down! Your Crazy as hell! Cotto will knock PacMan out within 9 rounds. mark my words.

    To this writer,

The excuse if Pacman wins over Cotto.

“Remember that Pacquiao hit a skeletal DLH with a trainload of clean punches, but never had him close to going down.”
What skeletal are you talking about ?

As you said a trainload of clean punches from Pacquiao. That’s the why and how Pacman will beat Cotto. Trainload of Punches.

That’s a good logical start, yes water evaporates we all learned that in grade school.

You really need Ginko Biloba, Mr Forgetful Rich.

  • Mr Rich says:

And by the way, you cant lecture me about anything. Ive forgotten more than you will ever know.

  • Mr Rich says:

Hahaha, he moves like a crab? And thats coming from a true nuthugger. I rest my case, Packy, you are a fan of Pacquiao not boxing. Comparing Pacquiao to Bruce Lee, are you crazy? Im a huge Lee fan but how many competative fights did he have? Maybe you really think Bruce Lee back flipped when he was fighting O’Hara in Enter the dragon? Actually that was a gymnast.

  • Packy says:

    Hey Spud,

Eating too much potato and all that carbohydrate rush makes your brain sluggish? Pacquiao has excellent lateral movement almost crab-like but fast, well like Bruce Lee!

I believe the boxing expert Bert Sugar more than you! Enjoy the link below.

    http://www.hbo.com/boxing/events/2009/0502_pacquiao_hatton/columns/sugar.html

“Pacquiao has the advantages in both speed and technical skills, giving great angles, along with excellent lateral movement, and throwing a much higher volume of punches than Hatton.”

  • owenspud says:

Agreed Mr Rich he has fast feet moving forwards but has poor lateral movement and tends to go straight back under duress-you cannot go back as fast as forward! He also has a poor defense and is made for the timing and power of Cotto, who is an excellent counter-puncher.Easy money!

  • Mr Rich says:

People keep going on about Manny’s amazing footwork and movment. Has it improved to much? i dont think so and i know that Pacquiao as always been hittable.

He may have well moved up the weights well keeping his speed and improving his power unlike Marquez but that doesnt mean he will be able to take the power of a pull blown welterweight.

Look how much more powerfull Mayweather was against Marquez, and Mayweather doesnt hit as hard as Cotto. Im not a hater or Pacman. If he Beats Cotto i will give him his due credit. Cotto in the 9th.

  • Packy says:

May the best pound for pound boxer wins!

Manny Pacquiao = Pound for Pound (Pounds his opponents)

Miguel Cotto = Pound for Pound (Pounds the balls of his opponents)

Yes I use a PC to post comments but we use rows upon rows of powerful servers and supercomputers to run our simulation programs.

We mainly use Game Theory, the math was mostly founded by John Nash (A Beautiful Mind movie).

It’s first application to battle/fight scenario is developed by the US military during the Cold War. They were trying to simulate scenarios of who will win if either the USSR or USA initiated an attack.

It is used in diverse fields: election prediction, traffic analysis/prediction, financial market sentiment, video games and yes boxing.

My program says that if Pacquiao pressures Cotto in Round 1 there is a 20.74% chances that Cotto will be knocked out, 49.8% that he will get knocked down. Cotto starts slow because we wants to gauge his opponents strength and weaknesses but once he gains momentum he is tough to beat.

In this fight, Cotto will have a hard time of gaining momentum beause of Pacquiao’s hand and footwork speed. Also Pacquiao’s angle of attacks confuses will confuse him.

There are 7 fights that Cotto struggled in the first round, the worst is the fight with Judah and Torres.

I don’t blame you if you don’t understand predictive computer science and math concepts. We mainly use Game Theory, the math was mostly founded by John Nash (A Beautiful Mind movie).

  • Packy says:

Cotto has been proven to handle HAND speed. Yes hand speed only. Pacquiao does NOT only have hand speed, it is his footwork that is also fast, his legs are bigger and in combination with his whole body it amplifies the power of his punch. His latereal movements are like no other boxer. He can dart in and out of range.

He’s also no longer the left hand boxer that he used to be, his right hand has trmendously improved. He has proven that he can carry his speed and strength going up in weight and the physical differences between Manny and Miguel are not that big. In some physical attributes, pacquiao has the advantage.

Look at the tale of the tape:
    http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=169025

There is no 100% certainty but based on all the evidence, 95% probability Pacquiao will win! Cotto has a 5% chance of executing his trademark left hook not on the body but on the balls of Manny. Manny better wear plaster of paris on his briefs.

Watch the Judah and Torres fights before you react and start hating. It’s in youtube and free!

Yes if Cotto wins NOT by low blows, I have to admit I am wrong! I’ll have to drown my sorrows with San Miguel beer.

And Pacquiao can just go back to JMM and knock him out cold once and for all. Peace!

  • Osting says:

De la hoya trained hard to grab ropes. thats why he wasn’t KO’ed by pac.

  • NANING says:

Miguel Cotto and Manny Pacquiao are what the sport of boxing needs today. These are two good, decent men who can clean up the sport’s dirty image. Cotto is a loving son, husband and father. He fights for family and country. Pacquiao struggled from abject poverty to where he is today. His training regimen is legendary – five straight hours of exercises, sparring, working the mitts, and no breaks. He is a man possessed.

These two men will give us the fight of the year, maybe the decade. There will be no loser in this fight, only a winner and a runner-up.

    I can’t wait.

  • NANING says:

Where’s Manuel Perez? I miss him.

  • Hawaiian Man says:

    Let’s Get It On…..

  • pacquiao is tu cute. juz luk at his mustache oh yum yum =) i think pacquiao will kiss cotto so hard lyk cotto’z never bin kissed before. cotto may run but he can never hide the flurry kisses of the pacman. cotto will try to hug but mannyz speed caresses will prove to be sweet and deadly. final analysis: PACQUIAO AND COTTO INLOVE ROUND 9 NOT MINDING REFEREE STOPPAGE ahihi ROACH AND ARUM CRAZY-JEALOUS TKO ROUND 1 ahihi

  • JACK says:

As you said:Remember that Pacquiao hit a skeletal DLH with a trainload of clean punches, but never had him close to going down. – Are you sure about this? Didnt you saw the fight was stopped?? Does it meant that ODLH was going down?

  • NANING says:

Pacquiao will start fast and give his all in the first three rounds. Cotto starts slow, and Pacquaio will exploit this weakness. Pacquiao will throw a lot of punches: left and right crosses, hooks and uppercuts. If Cotto wilts in three rounds but is not knocked out, Pacquiao will finish him off in another two rounds.

However, if Cotto takes all that Pacquiao has to offer in five rounds, and you see him still fighting strong in Round 6, you can bet your bottom dollar that he will win the fight, probably by decision or late stoppage.

  • Chacaroy says:

You make Cotto appear supernatural. He is not much bigger or stronger than Pacquiao. In fact, Pacquiao may be his superior in power. Pacquiao is way to fast and explosive to take him lightly.

  • whatever man says:

why do people always talk about distractions in pac’s camp? he ALWAYS has distractions. whether its shooting movies, recording an album, etc.

cotto will be his toughest test. i think this will be a war. it will be more like Pac/JMM 2 than pac/dlh or pac/hatton

  • MuthaPACa says:

I think the Pacquiao camp had always believe in the theory which is also shared with several asian martial arts…that “given the necessary fighting technique,a smaller man can always defeat a bigger foe”.
I heard that early in his fighting career, Pacquiao studied kickboxing. And his unique training seems to reflect some of that.Thats why his way of fighting seems to reflect Bruce Lee’s bouncing about and quick stinging punches & footwork.
Notice how Bruce Lee movies he always challenge and defeat bigger/stronger guys….The only difference is that Pacquiao does this in real life!

  • Ron says:

I am puerto rican but i cant jump on the cotto wagon. Cotto n pacquiao are way different fighters with totally different ways of training. I believe cotto trains to be explosive at times in a fight. When he fatigues he goes to a boxing and moving mode. Pacquiao trains at a high volume and is explosive from round 1 to 12. Even fatigued his body is trained to stay explosive. Cotto’s heart and determination can not be questioned, pacquiao’s either. This will make the fight exciting with cotto winning some rounds. Pacquiao will maintain a high volume wich will win him a close unanimous victory. No ko in this fight both fighters have to much pride to let it happen.

  • tompo says:

I think we’ll see a Pacman win, and this is based on anylsis, not fanboy logic. If you look at the fights against Diaz, De La Hoya and Hatton, Pacman absolutely annihilated them, and it was entirely down to phenomenal hand speed that meant his “more powerful” opponent never had the chance to hit back. In all three cases, he made his opponent look slow and finished.

Based on what Roach has been saying, Pacquiao has adjusted extremely well to a higher weight. The latest Roach interview says that Pacquiao has been weighing in at 150, hasn’t lost any of his speed, but is punching harder than he’s ever punched before. Roach is now saying Pacquiao will knock Cotto out, when a few weeks ago when the training started he was talking about a UD over 12 rounds – and I honestly doubt this is anything tactical or mind games from Roach, he’s been very up front and honest about what he thinks will happen in the past.

When you take Pacman’s current condition into consideration, and Cotto looking a bit slow against Clottey, it’s difficult to look beyond another mauling by Pacquiao. Cotto did well against Moseley, but Moseley isn’t a southpaw, and he’s also nowhere near as aggressive as Pacquiao. Based on the Clottey and Margarito fight, imo Cotto is too slow for a Pacquiao onslaught.

  • nepster says:

Tommy – when you get back…there will only be 1 week left! Pacquiao..TKO in 10! That one year ring subscription is going to come in handy…LOL!

  • hoy says:

The fight is still 2 weeks away but people already making excuses that Cotto will be weight drain at 145 lbs. Cotto’s weight before the fight against Jennings & Clottey was 146 lbs. A lb make him a weight drain? If Cotto loose the fight then Pacquiao is a better fighter, if he wins he is a better fighter then. Where’s your sportmanship? Don’t make excuses!!!!!!!!!!!! Who the best man wins. Go Pacquiao!!!!!!!!!!

  • pro e says:

this guy talkin don’t know anything about boxing. he’s prejudice

  • pro e says:

the only two people that stopped dlhy was hopkins and pacquiao. and manny ain’t going to let cotto hit him. cotto couldn’t even stop paulie malinagi which was a close fight. pacquiao will win and then you guys can bring on the excuses once again. ahahahahahahaghahahahhahahaha.

  • UKanSodOff says:

Im with the article writer, I think Pacquiaos bitten off more than he can chew.

Cotto wont be weight drained like DLH and he wont be a sitting duck like Hatton and apart from that hes not been in with a decent Welter.

I may be proved wrong by the Pacman “again”. Who knows. I just cant wait for it i think it could be amazing or it could be extremly short and 1 sided.

I dont know about the rest of you but at any sports event i have to choose somebody to support and even though it will come to me i can not decide who i actually Want to win this 1. i just know i think Cotto will win.

  • M says:

Cotto gets tagged he fires back only he’ll be hitting a lot lot harder than Marquez who rocked Pacquiao a few times. Margarito couldn’t put Cotto away with loaded gloves and no way Manny will be punching that hard. Roach is banking that Cotto’s a changed fighter after Margarito – just like he did with Oscar – he said he couldn’t pull the trigger any more and he was right. Cotto didn’t look the same against Clottey but came through a tough fight and he knows it. I reckon Roach has got it wrong and that Cotto will come out gunning for Manny as he’s confident he can knock him out, unlike the fight against Clottey. Manny won’t be able to hit Cotto like he did Oscar or Hatton – much smarter fighter and way way tougher than either of them. At some point Cotto will tag Manny hard and it’ll be all over. Cottos taken hard shots from the best welterweights in the division, Manny hasn’t.

  • Glen Anglin says:

I would never be shocked by a Pacquiao performance. As I said in the article, he has performed at the very top of boxing for 5 years now. I would not be shocked if he won, or even if he KO’d Cotto in the first round. I know Pacquiao is great. However, I think that at 145, he is not better than Cotto. In boxing, it is a very long way from 105 to 145 pounds.

  • Stop the BS!! says:

It’s so funny to listen to all these Pac-Nutthuggers doing all this ball lickin’ going into this fight. Don’t pose any logic to these people because they come back with the same tired old responses. Manny’s camp is a joke when it needed to be his best and Cotto’s is right on schedule. F**k the odds and all these jack a**es betting with their heart. Real boxing fans know the truth. Cotto is the biggest challenge Manny has ever faced and in my opinion will beat him convincingly. Now, go back to your ball gobbling Pactards!

  • tommy says:

    Nepster.Taking the week off.C.I.T.

  • dBomb says:

Well prepare to write your “I’m Shocked by Pacquiao’s performance” and “I was wrong in my analysis” speech after the fight….

  • nepster says:

In regards to the Margarito fight and Cotto taking loaded gloves for 11 rounds, the big difference is Marg’s punches, although powerful, Cotto could see and brace for. The knock out comes when someone doesn’t SEE the punch. And Cotto’s been rocked before…Chop Chop Corley comes to mind and if Chop Chop had any finishing power, Cotto would have had another loss.

  • karl williams says:

i agree with josh, this should be one of the fights of the year, could genuinely be fantastic, and on sky
sports not on ppv how lucky are we

  • AsIseeIt says:

I’d say there should be no excuses from either party whatever is the outcome.

I expect both fighters trained well… so, may the best man win.

    LET’S GET READY TO RUMBLE!!!!!

  • nepster says:

See your points, and don’t neccessarily agree with them, but how could you say that Pac’s optimum weight is 135 when he’s looked absolutely spectacular at 142 for the ODLH and 138 for the Hatton fight. He’s proved he can carry his speed and power at the higher levels, so I’m not sure how you can say his optimum weight is 135. I think his speed and power have carried up and can give any welterweight problems, but what remains to be seen is whether he can stand the punch of a true powerful welterweight. Props to Pac for taking the fight and props to Cotto as well.

  • what up says:

I respect your opinion and see your points. However, I think you are severely underestimating Pacquiao. This guy has gotten stronger and has gotten even stronger for Cotto than he was for Hatton and DLH. You guys will see in the fight what I mean. People tend to get lost in Manny’s physical size. Take it from me, come Nov.14, those of you who believed Cotto was the bigger stronger fighter will think twice about that idea. Watch……

  • Anonymous says:

Great article totally agree with everything. Even if pacman loses this he still goes down in boxing history!

  • M says:

The only reason the fight’s generating so much talk is because every true fan knows its a great match up and there’s not a lot to choose between them. Anyone professing anything else with any huge confidence simply doesn’t understand the game. One thing that will happen almost certainly is that pacquiao will reach too far at some point. Happens to just about every fighter scaling the divisions – Roy Jones damaging himself with the move up to heavy and coming back down too quickly, Moseley vs Wright, De la Hoya vs Hopkins. At some point pacman will reach too far, only question is whether its this fight?

  • Chris says:

Emmanuel Steward said it best “It’s the punch you
don’t see that does the most damage” Cotto won’t know what hit him. As for power, Cotto may have more power but it’s useless power as he won’t be able to land a clean shot with Pacquiao’s foot movement. If this was a contest on who could land the hardest shot on a heavy bag Cotto would win. But this is a boxing match. Pacquiao will win in spectacular fashion.

  • Glen Anglin says:

Duran was off the charts great, for sure. And much fun to watch.

However, there is one fight that sticks with me regarding Roberto. When he defeated Buchanan( who was a very good champ) for the title, he struggled with Ken’s movement and handspeed at times. The same would be true if he faced Pacquiao.

However, Roberto DID finally beat down Buchanan (even disregarding the ‘low’ blow). Still, I see Pacquiao edging Duran.

  • m. cotto says:

yes cotto was able to take margo’s strong, but slow thudding punches that you can see from a mile away. PACs punches are totally different. they are sharp, snappy, accurate, comIng from different angles and cotto will not be expecting them.

cotto WILL get hurt. dont kid yourself.

by the way PACs punches will come in bunches and the right side is as powerful as the left.

  • Ayaz malik says:

IT WILL BE A FIGHT AND A NIGHT TO REMEMBER FOR YEARS TO COME. IN 17 YEARS OF BEING A BOXING FAN IV NEVER LOOKED FORWARD TO A FIGHT SO MUCH THAN THIS ONE.

  • Gerard M says:

Pacman over any lightweight ever?? Roberto Duran owns that crown.
Pacman will lose because of his disastrous trianing camp. It seems to bedlam. But you have to respect him for trying, he’s a proper warrior and just what boxing needs.

  • Rock says:

I don’t know, well, lets put it this way.
If he succeds on Nov. 14 then yes! no doubt.
If he doesn’t, then I would say NO.

  • Anonymous says:

do you consider Pacquiao a better light weight than Roberto DUran?

  • Rock says:

The question is, can Pac handle Cotto’s Punches?

  • Rock says:

He took a lot of LOADED GLOVES for 11 Rds. I’m sure he can handle Pac’s punches.

  • Anonymous says:

Bigger and stronger doesn’t necessarily result in a win because if Cotto can’t hit the target, his size advantage doesn’t mean anything. The punch that Pacman delivered to Hatton in 2nd round can knock even a middleweight. With Pacquiao’s speed and accuracy I’m sure he can deliver the same punch, the question is how will Cotto take it.

  • EEE says:

I think cotto will win. Cotto is not a fighter made for pacs style who fights with his hands down and chin up. Cotto will not be weight drained like de la hoya. his last two fights he has come in at 146. i don’t think 1 pound would drain him like de la hoya who was coming from 154 to 147, i mean 145, losing 9 pounds at the age of 35. Cotto has boxing skills, underrated speed, a good chin, and power in both hands. i think this fight will look like morales pacquiao 1 but more brutal because cotto hits harder than morales obviously. cotto’s jab is going to throw off the pacman like morales did.

  • Rock says:

No need to go up in weight. I guess his fire comes by proving people wrong!!! Even though he may not get credit in some people’s eyes, he will get it in real boxing fans and history.

Seems to me you are not a fan of boxing. You are a fan of a 1 man. Cotto KO his next victim Shock the WORLD!

  • willymacmoore says:

hand wraps or not Cotto couldn’t hurt margo. A rematch with margo will destroy cotto’s confidence if he couldn’t hurt him again.

  • willymacmoore says:

cotto will get his credit when he moves up in weight and win. other than that he just a good boxer with a punchers chance of beating pacquiao. Pacquiao is a different boxer from all other boxers. he has improved so much in every fight that i don’t know what he is going 2 do next

  • D says:

I like both fighters. i think Cotto will win by late round KO. Anyone that thinks Cotto is a shot fighter is retarded and do not know anything about the sport of Boxing.

  • Rock says:

Nov. 14 we will all see who’s more exciting!

  • Anonymous says:

cotto in my eyes only gets credit for beating mosley

  • willymacmoore says:

pacquiao gets more credit because he’s a more exciting fighter than cotto

  • Rock says:

They are both good fighters. I just do hate when fans become enemies talking BS before the fight, and if they were wrong, they hide for months.

My comments, I respect both fighters, they both have great careers. I will admit I am a fan of Cotto, and hoping he will deliver and win this fight.

The one thing that do bothers me is that I haven’t seen a fighter with so much skill, intelligence, and a great career, get’s no credit.

Pacquiao, beat great fighters weather they were in their prime or time to retire has always been respected and given credit for his performance and willingness to fight whoever.

Cotto, beat great fighters as well, have battled to the last round, have fought any fighter that steps into the ring, and no credit.

But, anyhow I do respect both fighters, they are great, and win or loose they should be given credit for their willingness to put a good fight. I however believe that Cotto will win this fight, if he does, I hope he finally gets the credit and respect he has deserved for so long.

  • willymacmoore says:

Cotto beat jennings at 146 for a vacant wbo belt. Then clottey at 146. So how will he be weight drained from losing 1 pound?

  • Mixi Gould says:

It will be an exciting fight. Cotto never yet experience a fast fighter. This time he will. I’m a big fan of Cotto but when money is involve, I will bet it all for Packy. Let me tell you why. The Pilphino guy has tremendous power in both hands and his footwork is also fast. By the time Cotto launches his power shot Packy will be on his left side and release a powerfull right hand then again in the middle for a powerful left hook and then a straight in the triangle block just like what happened to Dela Hoya. If you think Cotto will win then bet all your money to Cotto just like what I did.

Glen did you call Cotto handsome? i agree for the most part. i’ll be routing for Pac but this may be his first loss in a while. either way it will be a great fight and thats what i want to see.

  • manny pac fan says:

You can never rule the little man out, My head says cotto but my heart is telling me pac will win…

  • Anonymous says:

cotto’s last 2 fights has been at 146. i think pacquiao can take the few punches that cotto might land. pacquiao is more powerful then u think. everything cotto is saying is the same thing hatton said b4 his fight with pacquiao. and fighting with a cut is part of boxing. plenty boxers fight with a cut and still k.o their opponent.

Ps,I admire and like watching the both but for a number of reasons I favour Cotto!

  • owenspud says:

Agreed! What I do notice though as an impartial British fan is how Pac fans generally jump on the bandwagon and simply believe that Pac will win because they are fans of his, while those favouring Cotto this time tend to do so on the basis of analysis!
