Upcoming Super Fight Between Pacquiao and Cotto

By Richard Bailey: To start with WOW! This is a fight fans fight. A fight the fans want to see, and now it’s happening. Bravo, Mr. Bob Arum, bravo indeed. Why is this fight a great match up? Simple! It’s the real POWER V PRECISION a title that should not have been given to the Ricky Hatton v Paulie, oh what’s his face. With respect to Ricky Hatton and Paulie, well Ricky really, their fight was exciting but only because we was all waiting for the knockout punch that we all thought was coming, but never did.
David Diaz is a very tough opponent, but at the very best maybe 4th best in the lightweight division. Why didn’t Manny fight the likes of Juan Diaz, or Joel Casamayor the recognized lineal champ of the lightweight division and the number one respectively, why Diaz, because he knew he would beat him with ease.
Same as De la Hoya, in his prime was a fantastic entertaining boxer with so much heart and skill it was uplifting almost to watch him beat the likes of Julio Cesar Chavez and Ricardo Mayorga, but everyone knew from past examples, when you fight in a higher weight class and then drop down a division you are going to show a bad performance and get beaten BADLEY! Am I right Roy Jones Jr. fans?
The fact Manny came up two divisions to fight him doesn’t even enter my head anymore because the bottom line is, he wasn’t fighting De la Hoya in there, he was fighting a washed up chump who knew he was shot and was going to lose.
Now we have Ricky “the Hitman” Hatton, one of my favorite boxers of all time to come out of England along with Chris Eubank and The Dark Destroyer Nigel Benn. He was a monster at light welterweight but it was a very weak division and his biggest win was over Kostya Tszyu.
With Ricky’s style of fighting we all knew Manny would destroy him and he really, really did. In fact I have only ever watched that knockout once because of the sheer devastation of it. We were all worried for Ricky at that moment and sad as it is to say, he should defiantly retire because he has nothing left to prove and while Manny is number one, Ricky never will be.
Ricky was a brilliant fighter but by no means GREAT. Now however Manny’s not fighting an over rated fighter, or a washed up fighter. He is fighting Cotto, a man who quite simply has never ducked anyone in the sport or the 2 weight classes he has fought in, but he has also beat them all, apart from his loss to Antonio Margarito, but until a rematch between them is held I don’t hold it against him.
Purely because of the loaded gloves controversy Cotto has beat Sugar Shane Mosley, Zab Judah, Joshua Clotty, Michael Jennings, Carlos Quintana, Lovemore Ndou, Paulie Malignaggi, and Ricardo Torres. That’s 7 world champions in two divisions (Light Welterweight and Welterweight) who were at their peaks and considered the best in their weight class.
Manny is now fighting a man who holds unique boxing skills, mixed with a warrior and brawlers heart, that just so happens to have some of the most accurate punch records of the sweet science. He also hits hard, 27 knockouts in 34 wins is impressive. He is a very good body puncher which is where Manny is weak his two knockout losses were to the body.
He has great footwork and can handle speed mixed with power very well. He beat Sugar Shane for goodness sake who is arguably one of the hardest hitters in the sport and is just as fast as Manny. He also has the height and arm length advantage, and of course the major one, the natural weight advantage.
Cotto will come into the fight weighing easily 156 pounds where as Manny will maybe if he is lucky weight 149- 150, and Manny does not have a great chin any ways. The one shot Ricky manages to land shocked Manny and backed him up a bit, neither has he really had a competitive fight since his questionable victory over Juan Manuel Marquez.
Who in my opinion and many others won both of their fights. Speed does kill indeed, but in the sweet science of boxing, the right timing and skill mixed with power can KILL SPEED. So my prediction for this fight is simple, the first round Manny will try and work out Cotto’s style and pace as will Cotto with Manny.
Then maybe round 5 or 6 when a few punches land and a bit of dancing happens around the ring, Cotto will land some heavy blows and Manny will go down for the count. Although he will rise, I see a Cotto victory by ways of TKO by maybe end of round 6 or mid round 7.
This fight has all the makings for Ring Magazine’s Fight of the Year award. Two true warriors who fight for their fans and countries on their backs, plenty of skill, danger, excitement, and precision and power all in one. I for one can’t wait.

I am in shock this is the first article that actually makes some kind of sense. I’ve read everything about this awesome matchup and they all have been the same pacman rd 5,6,7 and so on. Keep under estimating cotto remember he still has vengeance in his eyes bcuz of his 1st loss.

When Cotto fought Margarito he saw all of Margaritos punches coming because Margarito is not a fast puncher. Margarito is steady “breakdown your opponent” style fighter. Manny Pacquiao is fast, powerful and can hit at different angles. Cotto won’t see the punch that will knock him out just like Ricky Hatton. It’s the punches that you don’t see that knocks you out.
Cotto has problems with the punches he doesn’t see coming. Like in his fights where he was severly wobbled by Demarcus Corley and Zab Judah.
Cotto won the fight with Corely because it was fixed. In the fight with Judah, Cotto survived by Lowblowiing. I don’t see Cotto winning unless he goes to lowblows.
When Pacquiao connects fast and flush on Cotto’s chin, Cotto will do the funky chicken dance…. and I know we all want to see the funky chicken dance.

Cotto’s power did not hurt Clottey cause Clottey has a wicked defense and very strong upperbody BUT Cotto did knock him down with a JAB that landed flush on Clotteys chin. So IMO it was Clotteys defense that prevented the hard shots to land cleanly.

I’m a big pacman fan but I find Mr. Bailey’s arguments very rational. Cotto is bigger, stronger and younger than Pacquiao. Cotto’s best armory is his jab, a jab that knocked down Clottey in their last bout. Then Cotto has his power hook to the head and to the body combined by his very frightening uppercut. Cotto is also a very systematic combo shooter and as a boxer I rate him way above the boxing skills of Diaz, Hatton and above the faded Dela Hoya. I just see one little weakness of Cotto and that is his being a flat footed, he drew his power punches from a well settled feet and I don’t know if Roach and Pacquiao can exploit this weakness. Maybe Roach should do away with that kind of thinking that he trusts so much the ability of his fighter because without a solid fight plan this Cotto will be going to handle Manny his worst beating ever.
All Manny will say to you all is “BEAT ME FIRST” “before you underrate me”….

Everybody is saying that Oscar was already a shot fighter after he was defeated by Manny. Why is it that I didn’t hear ’bout Oscar being a shot fighter prior to the fight? Now, it is easy to say that Oscar was already past his prime, etc. when he fought Manny. Ironically, that was not what I heard from the “boxing world” prior to the fight. Then here comes Hatton, after the fight with Manny, everybody is saying that Hatton didn’t really have a chance against the Pilipino Slugger. Making conclusions after a big fight is much less impressive than correctly predicting an outcome of a big fight, based on pure boxing knowledge. Manny Pacquiao is a very rare athlete who comes once in a very long while. Why not appreciate what he have done while he is still in boxing, because like any other athlete, the day will come when he will retire. Give Manny Pacquiao what is due to him. Comparing him to any active boxer today is even unfair, at least to my opinion.

it’s ok to write an article predicting a certain boxer will lost to a certain boxer, giving negative credit to one guy & positive to the other, make bias statement, make one sided judgement & even to the extent of raising the hand of your favorite guy in your write-ups even though the fight is still coming.

No doubt this will be manny’s toughest fight to date. It will require manny to be at his best to beat cotto. However, it is precisely that which makes manny the superior athlete. He always comes in 100% prepared and his fighting style is tailor-fitted against his oponent. For dela hoya he perfected the straight left lead, move to the side. For Hatton, he perfected the timely right hook. For cotto, no doubt manny will find specific move/s that will prove to be the decider. It was only JMM who’s riddle proved very difficult to solve. thank god for those 4 knockdowns! go pacman!!!

D. DIAZ – Pacman’s first fight in 135 – he is just testing this weight, since diaz is a top rank fighter, a champion, maybe a good test for PAcman at 135.
DELA HOYA – at 147, considering Pacman only fought once in 135 from 130, this is a big leap to 147, 12lbs apart from 135. Considering Delahoya’s last fight is at 150lbs that is why Oscar is conident he can make 147 with ease. Even if you said that dela hoya is washed up, he is 4 inches taller than Pacman and a lot bigger, considering his power. Also, i think we forgot that Dela hoya was preparing for his rematch with mayweather, what if that fight pushes through and Mayweather won the fight? would you say that Delahoya is washed up? Or what if Dela Hoya won, would you say that he is washed up?
HATTON: some said including Hatton that 140 is his best division, and he is undefeated there.

I really dont understand that despite the hardworks manny & his team undergone, & when it pays off come fight day, all you have to do is to question the legitimacy of their win.
I have read many commnts that hatton will just break pakyaws glass body, & hatton is too much for many, pakyaw’s chin is no solid, etc. & everytime manny prove them wrong, again it is still questionable.
I am not a pakyaw fan & definitely not a boxing analyst, but reading article like this, makes me want to write also pretending to be an analyst.
I believed that Manny’s got too much power than Cotto especially on dealing on his speed. Yes, his speed kills!! His reflexes is “catquick” where his opponents cannot cope with him and whoever goes up against with him, Pacman is always agressive, moving in and rarely back tracking. And it’s hard to stun him because he also has a tremendous ability to absorb punishment which I don’t see to Cotto. Cotto is a better boxer but Pacman is an absulute slugger. Pacman had all the punches in the book. He was a thinker fighter of what Freddie Roach give him a plan and he moved very well. I don’t think Cotto can survive Pacman punches. Indeed, this fight will end up for a knockout in middle rounds for Cotto.
Good article if you’re a not a Pac fan. I agree with what you said about Cotto’s power. Then, why until now Cotto does not want to put his title belt on the line against Pacquiao (145lbs catchweight is out of the question)? It implies that Cotto is afraid of losing his belt to Pacquiao which degrades the fight. Due to this reason, the Nov 14th clash will flop on PPV, even at live gate. Can you comment on this matter?

Mosley may have faster and stronger punch than manny. But remember that manny’s hands is perfectly combined with superb footwork and great head movement. The combination of these factors (plus the unseen) will be manny’s greatest weapon against whoever is infront of him.

Like all other great fighters, Pacquio can also take tune up fights. And Diaz was his tune-up in invading the higher weight divisions. Why is this writer making isues about that? Ali, Leonard, Hearns etc. all took tune-up fights.
It’s also important to point out that Hatton is a world-class fighter. It was only Pacquiao who is capable of making him look like an amateur. No other opponent, even Mayweather, made Hatton look that way.

Interesting point of view. Here are some thoughts for you. If David Diaz fought other. He would have fought more competetive fight. Why because he can hit the other guy. Why was he demolished by Pacman, because he can’t find Pacman. All he found were varieties of punches torturing his face. Goes the same with Oscar. I believe if Oscar faced Margarito, his jabs would have been much more effective cause Margarito would be standing right in front of him. Unfortunately he fought Pacman. He only caught all of Pacman’s punches. Ricky, well the knock says everything. Of course he would not land, that is why the speed is the on that fight.

I’m a big Pac fan, but I’m sensing that a lot of other Pac fans are under estimating Cotto. Cotto’s relatively quick, has pop, and it took Antonio Margo-cheato 11 rounds with loaded bricks to get him to retire. However, I was worried about Hatton as well and we all know how that works. Richard, I enjoyed reading your article. However, your reasons are fundamentally flawed. JM Marquez, D Diaz and DLH fought the old pre 2008 version of Manny Pacquiao who had a defense susceptable to counter punches and possesed a one dimensional offense. Also, the Cotto you described was the old pre 2008 who unquestionably dominated his division(s). I agree with you that Cotto would win – if the fight took place in 2008 or before. Fighters are like cars: BMW or Mercedes elite luxury class comparisions. The 2009 Pacquiao model added new features – right hook, head movement and better defense while the 2009 Cotto model downgraded the speed, power and endurance , but improved in the heart feature.
The 2009 Pacquiao model will surely out perform the 2009 Cotto model in knockout fashion.

Last time he was KO’d was 1999 when pacquiao was 19 years old. Since 2001 Ledwaba fight, Pacquiao has a record of 18W-1L-2D with 14KO. He has been knowned down (KD) once (Barrera slip) and with 37 Opponent KD’s. Some notable KD’s are Hatton 3, Marquez 4 times, Barrera 2, Morales 5, Diaz 1… amongst this 0 KD for Pacquiao. Also to note is that pacquiao has been stunned early in the fights but this would only light a fire inside him. Pacquiao’s Speed, Power, Endurance, heart of a champion, Chin….. the greatest….

Right people. lets be straight, and before i go into one SAM< Mosley went one division up and droped down one division. You cant say he dominated it cause since he came back down he has won two fights, 1 againts Ricardo Maorga which he took his time to do, and another againts Maragrito who lets face it was a cheater. He aint dominated the division at all, and ricky hatton is not over rated like i said in the article he was a great fighter just not as good as he thought. I mean when i first heard of him to use his head movement and footwork to win his fight i thought what a lot of other people thought. BOLLOCKS. It was inevitable what was going to happen, plus i always knew Manny would beat De la Hoya, because he would be too fast and powerfull for some one who had to fight in a weight class that he hadn't fought in for years. Im not a very big Cotto fan at all, im a much bigger manny fan than a Cotto fan, but its simple facts Cotto will be bigger and heavier coming into the fight, and will have better timeing than the ever so lunge with my powerfull straight left Pacquiao. It is gonna be a real test to see if cotto is over the Margarito loss and lets be honest if those gloves were loaded in their fight then he can definatly take a punch. If i am wrong about the outcome then i will hold my hands up high and admit it but like someone said on this wall already, its only my matter of opinion.
If Manny’s learning curve will even soar high, which I think it will, as Roach is already cooking something for Cotto. Cotto will look like an amateur when he fights Manny.

I will tell it as i see it. I love Pacquiao but Cotto will prove to be more than a worthy adversary. He is a true strong and fast welterweight. It will be speed and stamina vs. strength and size. This is a 50/50 fight for Manny but i strongly believe he will pull through. The issue i have with Cotto is his stamina. During his fight with Mosley, Margarito and Clottey.. he faded in the late rounds backpedaling. He backs up a lot during the late rounds. Hopefully Pacquiao doesn’t get hit with one of Cotto’s vicious body shots.
Cotto does not have a defense against a south paw fighter specially like Pacman. Cotto will go down in 5 flooded with his own blood..Pacman is too strong and too fast, but both fighters are very smart. Defense is the best offense in this fight and i know for a fact (Cotto v Judah) that Cotto can’t block a super fast/strong left hand like Manny. I hope I am wrong, because i sure would want to see Manny finish a 12 round fight…Or hell, just give us a great fight! $60 is too expensive for 2 rounds of action?!

Gianluca Branco thinks Miguel Cotto is going to eat a lot of Manila Iced uppercuts from Pacman. His guard is more of hook protective but susceptible to uppercuts and sometimes prone to overhand punches. Keep in mind that Cotto is a natural left-hander who fights in the orthodox stance just like De La Hoya. If Pac can neutralize his left leads, what is Cotto gonna do? His right hand is underdeveloped. If you notice in his fights, when he has the opponent on the defensive, especially against the ropes, he switches to southpaw so he can gain more leverage for his LEFT power punches. He just paws with the right then delivers the left. Almost as if he has no confidence that he can hurt the opponent with his right hand. Again just like Oscar never really hurt someone with his right hand. It’s natural, if you’re using that hand in everything that you do in your life, you tend to rely on it. It’s a habit that’s hard to fight. Branco says he sees Manny fighting Cotto the way he fought ODLH, bob n weave, combinations, lateral movement, plus that shiny new weapon Freddie Roach will have built, the MANILA ICED UPPERCUT. Only Cotto will offer much more resistance than Oscar and Manny will get licked also.

Cotto at the same token is staying on middleweight currently,and try to get down to maximum 147 lb. welterweight, having a power of middleweight. so these guys has alot of advantage to pacman, yet you treat pacman the meanest of all, while poor MP has to strugle to get to welterweight bringing w/ him his started 106 lbs power, b/c he has guts w/ a bisaya heart(no fear, but to God). This is a very good article! You gave some very good points on how Pac should be the underdog. Cotto is the beast! The fight will cotto’s strength and timing vs Pacquiao’s speed. ALso, cotto has very bad defense in uppercut and straight punches. Straight punches is Pac’s specialty. I think if Pac beats cotto, there should be no more excuses if he’s great or not. There should be no more “overrated”. I think if pac wins, we should give him his credit that he really deserve. Until then, we’ll see if he’s really THAT great!
Every fighter has an excuse after being beaten. Golden girl Delahoya is the “girliest man” in boxing. His father even said Manny could not even hurt Oscar with his punches. Decent article – writer is obviously a Cotto fan, but his arguments aren’t totally biased. One thing that he does fail to mention though is that although SSM and Mayweather MAY be as fast as Pacquaio, Pacquiao throws 3-5 combinations at once, and although you may see the first couple coming, you can’t see the last couple which are the far more dangerous punches. The writer could be right, however, saying Cotto’s too big and too good of a boxer, or that his timing can throw Pacquiao off, but that’s the same that people said of Hatton (minus the good boxer part). Plus, the punch that Pacquiao landed on Hatton on the end would have knocked out a donkey, cold, so he’s obviously carrying the power with increased weight. Bottom line is, if you’re a Cotto fan, you’re going to think Cotto will win. Pac fans think Pac will win, and that’s why we have to give credit to both fighters for taking a very dangerous fight. IMO, Pac wins a tough fight…either late round TKO or decision. Cotto has a great chance though, and whoever placed the odds at 2-1 in favor of Pac are absolutely insane.

you don’t understand that pacquiao is hard to time. no one has been able to time pacquiao’s movement. JMM was the only one who was able to time it and that’s because JMM IS the second best p4p fighter in the world. very well disciplined counter-puncher who can at least keep up with pacquiao’s speed.
cotto is a fighter with a lot of heart and great mechanics. i’m sorry to say, though.. i don’t think he’ll be able to time pacquiao’s head movement and foot work. cotto isn’t fast enough to keep up with pacquiao. clottey was taggin’ cotto and clottey is no where near as fast as pacquiao.
another note, mayweather and mosley are fast fighters. maybe mayweather is faster than pacquiao, but they don’t barrage you with fast punches from rounds 1-12 the way pacquiao does.

Pacquaio is going for a world title at a 7th weight, Mosley aint quicker then Pacquaio.
Mosley was not for real when he offered to go to 140lbs to fight Pacquaio, if you really knew boxing you would know how un achievable that would be for a 38 year old who has campaigned at 154 and walks around at about 175+lbs!, he would be a skeleton at 140.
1) De La Hoya was not labled a “washed up chump” when he lost a debatable split decision to Mayweather a year prior.
2) Kostya Tszyu is a future hall of famer, no question. Ricky Hatton wasn’t a club fighter all along, Manny simply exposed his seemingly obvious weaknesses. If he’s so overrated, why was Mayweather the only one to beat him?
3) You’re right about Cotto coming into the fight a 155 lb monster, something Manny has yet to deal with. However, saying that Sugar Shane is faster than Pacquiao is a stretch; Manny was tagged by Hatton and backed up by a solid left. If you watched the fight, you should have seen the response: Manny coming through in vintage form, making Hatton practically run backward into the opposite corner.

I love Cotto and this will be a hard fight to watch, but his defense is questionable, his chin is suspect, and he has stamina issues in the later rounds of every fight. Pacquiao on the other hand just gets stronger as the fight progresses. Not to mention Cotto is still without a bonafide trainer while Pacquiao is ever-learning from a 3 time trainer of the year.
